- Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor: Measures the amount of air entering the engine. This information is crucial for the engine computer to determine the correct amount of fuel needed for proper combustion.

- Intake Air Temperature (IAT) Sensor: Detects the temperature of the air entering the engine. Colder air is denser, so the engine computer uses this information to adjust the air-fuel mixture for optimal performance.

- Throttle Position Sensor (TPS): Tracks the position of the throttle pedal (how far it’s pressed down). This tells the engine computer how much power the driver demands, allowing it to control engine speed (RPMs).

- Idle Air Control (IAC) Valve: Regulates the engine’s idle speed. It controls the amount of air bypassing the throttle valve to maintain a smooth and consistent idle RPM when the driver isn’t pressing the gas pedal.

How does ethanol affect my mileage?

Ethanol contains roughly one third less energy than ethanol-free (also known as non-ethanol) gasoline does, which means you will get slightly fewer miles per gallon if you use E10 or E15. The fewer miles per gallon you get is small, but measurable. Vehicles will typically get 3-4% fewer miles per gallon out of their vehicle when running E10. For E15, the amount goes up to 4-5% fewer miles per gallon. For example, if you’re driving a vehicle that gets 32 miles per gallon, and you’re running E10, you would get between 0.96 to 1.28 miles less per gallon, taking you down to between 30.72 to 31.04 miles per gallon.

- PCV Valve -

The positive crankcase ventilation valve releases exhaust gas and unburned fuel from the engine block into the intake manifold.

All engines allow some exhaust gases, unburned fuel and oil to “blow by” the pistons and collect in the crankcase where it produces sludge if not eliminated.

Separating the crankcase from the intake manifold, which is a source of varying air pressure, the PCV valve maintains the optimal level of vacuum in the crankcase to extract the products of blow-by as well as potentially damaging moisture. Automakers may designate a replacement interval.

The valve is an inexpensive, easily replaced example of the dozens of parts that can elicit a check engine light and associated vexing investigation. It can also be the source of oil leaks.
