The check engine codes mechanics see most β€” and what each one actually means. A code tells you where to look. It does not tell you which part to buy. Diagnose first, then decide. Buying used? Message us INSPECT and we will check the car before you hand over your money.

Transmissions don't fail all at once. They warn you first β€” slipping gears, delayed shifts, a shudder you can feel in the seat.

This one came apart for a full rebuild. Every clutch pack, every seal, inspected and replaced.

Catch it early and it's a service. Ignore it and it's a tow truck.

Has your car ever started slipping gears on you β€” and what did you do about it?

Before you buy used, watch this. I'm counting down the 10 worst used cars on the market β€” the ones that empty your wallet after the purchase.

10. 2009–2013 VW Tiguan β€” 2.0T timing chain tensioner failures, heavy oil consumption

9. 2009–2014 BMW 550i/750i/X5 50i/X6 50i β€” N63 V8: oil consumption, injector failures, brutal valve stem seal jobs

8. 2011–2016 Chevy Cruze β€” coolant leaks everywhere, turbo failures that take the engine with them

7. 2017–2019 Ford Escape β€” 1.5L EcoBoost coolant intrusion into the cylinders

6. 2010–2017 Chevy Equinox/GMC Terrain β€” 2.4L oil-consumption disaster, engines seize

5. 2011–2019 Hyundai Sonata/Kia Optima β€” Theta II engines seizing, billions in replacements

4. 2012–2018 Ford Focus / 2011–2019 Fiesta β€” PowerShift dual-clutch nightmares

3. 2017–2021 Chrysler Pacifica Plug-In Hybrid β€” electrical gremlins, fire recalls

2. 2013–2020 Nissan Altima/Rogue/Pathfinder β€” Jatco CVTs dying at 80–90k miles

1. Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep (2015–2017 200, 2014–2018 Cherokee, 2015–2018 Renegade) β€” the worst of the bunch
A cheap used car isn't cheap if it needs an engine. Get it inspected before the money moves.

Your check engine light is trying to tell you something. Here are the 10 codes I see most β€” and what they actually mean:

1. P0171/P0174 β€” Lean: too much air, not enough fuel
2. P0300–P0308 β€” Engine misfires
3. P0401 β€” EGR flow insufficient
4. P0442 β€” Small EVAP leak
5. P0455 β€” Large EVAP leak
6. P0128 β€” Thermostat stuck open
7. P0135 β€” O2 sensor heater fault
8. P0172/P0175 β€” Rich: too much fuel, not enough air
9. P0700 β€” Transmission fault flag
10. P0420 β€” Catalytic converter β€” the most expensive one on this list

A code points you to a system, not a guaranteed bad part. Diagnose, don’t guess.

Buying used? A seller can clear every one of these before you show up. Get it inspected first.

Here's something most used car buyers don't know: auction prices usually soften in November and December. Dealers are pushing to hit year-end numbers, holiday spending pulls buyers out of the market, and the tax-season rush hasn't started yet. Less demand at auction means lower wholesale prices β€” and more room to negotiate on the lot.
September already showed wholesale slipping, with the Manheim index down 1.1% from August. If the seasonal pattern holds, late fall into winter is shaping up to be a smart time to buy.
Just remember: a good price on a bad car is still a bad deal. Get it inspected before the money moves.

Used-car prices just fell again.

The September Manheim index came in at 205.9 β€” wholesale values are now 0.6% below last year, the first time in 2026 they've dipped under year-ago levels. Supply is up too: 28 days' worth of used cars on lots, over two days more than last year. More inventory, less seller leverage.

Good news for buyers β€” but it makes one thing more important, not less.

When the market softens, more of what's for sale is the stuff dealers have been sitting on, or a private seller cutting the price to move a car fast. A lower price doesn't mean the car is sound. The discount makes the inspection matter more, not less.

One split worth knowing if you're shopping: used EVs are running 4.3% above last year while gas vehicles are 1.6% below. Two different markets right now.

If you're buying this fall, get eyes on the car before the money moves. I do remote pre-purchase inspections β€” send INSPECT in a message and I'll walk you through it.

Buying a used car? Start the engine and look at the dash.

This one is showing "change engine oil" at around 97,000 miles, plus check engine, battery, and ABS lights. Every one of those is a question the seller needs to answer before money changes hands.

That's exactly what I do with CarConfidant β€” I walk the car with you over live video, before you buy. Message this page "INSPECT" and let's look at it together.

Some jobs start with everything coming out.

This engine came out so we could get to the real problem underneath. Most people never see their car like this β€” but this is what thorough work looks like.

We fix it right, or we don't do it at all.

When's the last time a shop showed you what they actually found under the hood?
