The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) confirmed the detection of a New World screwworm (NWS) in a bovine in Zavala County, Texas. NWS is a serious pest that affects livestock, pets, wildlife, and less commonly, people and birds. NWS larvae (maggots) burrow into the flesh of living animals, causing serious damage to livestock.

USDA urges residents in the area to check their pets and livestock for signs of NWS. Look for draining or enlarging wounds and signs of discomfort. Also look for screwworm larvae and eggs in or around body openings, such as the nose, ears, and genitalia. If you suspect your animal is infected with screwworm, contact your state animal health official or USDA area veterinarian in charge immediately.

Belmont Stakes is today! Here are my thoughts on today's addition.

Both the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes had long shot winners. Here is a long shot to look at in the Belmont. Most money will be on Renegade and Chief Wallabee. Will try to beat them with local Emerging Market. Troubled Kentucky Derby run including losing a shoe in the race. He has been training at Saratoga since the Derby and gets Prat in the irons. I look for Commandment to rebound with less runners in the race from the Derby.

Use the two favorites mention above in the exotics. I am rooting for the Kentucky Derby winner Golden Tempo, but do not like how he trained exclusively at Keeneland. Hopefully I am wrong and the Derby winner can pull it off.

Belmont Stakes post positions. I will give my opinion on Saturday morning. Under card is amazing with the Met Mile. Nysos meets Journalism along with other strong contenders. Woody Stephen's Stakes will have Taj Malhal wheeling back from the Preakness Stakes. Crude Velocity for Bob Baffert will try again after an impressive Pat Day Stakes win on Kentucky Derby day with a gutsy win over Englishman for Cherie DeVaux. Six Speed led the Kentucky Derby before giving way will try the cut back. Stellar turf racing will be included on this Saratoga card.

My Preakness Stakes analysis. Historically, Kentucky Derby runners have done well in the Preakness. Ocelli and Incredibolt ran well in the Derby and I will use them in my ticket. I did not like how Rubusta ran and to inconsistent for me to use.

Local favorite Taj Mahal has not done anything wrong at Laurel Park. I had the pleasure of having breeder Peter Vesgo as a client during my Farm Manager days at Six Winters Farm. Vesgo is the breeder of Taj Mahal. Chief Honcho has to be respected, especially having the hot jockey Jose Ortiz in the saddle.

My long shot pick is Crupper. Coming off stakes win at Oaklawn and I am acquainted with the name's sake and person who raised Crupper. I will be rooting for another local (Lexington) in Great White, who had to scratch out of the Derby.

Conclusion: Chad Brown will have the favorite in Iron Honor. Chad is experienced trainer winning the Preakness in the past and has a great jockey in the saddle. Have to be respected but one can't bet them all! I like Incredibolt being chased by Ocelli. Will use Taj Mahal, Chief Honcho, Crupper and Great White. If you have the funds add Iron Honor.
