tldr: I’m always happy to lend a helping hand and second opinion for folks that need immediate help when Tesla service isn’t able to assist.
A customer reached out to me this morning because his wife’s Y got the dreaded “Low Coolant” alert while she was charging in Elizabethtown on their way back home to Lexington. To make matters worse the screen would not power on even after multiple attempts to reboot it. Thankfully they made it home safely but they did have to travel below 65MPH to get home. The customer reached back out mid morning after they got home and said “the car’s making a weird noise..” So I scheduled a time for me to come out after I got out of my full time job to check it out. I had him move the vehicle and there it was, signs of a coolant leak. I took the cowel off and the coolant tank was COMPLETELY empty. I get it onto some jack points so I could inspect for damage and try to locate the leak, but I couldn’t find anything after about 30 minutes. I suspect there to be a hairline crack somewhere. I did have some G48 fluid with me so I filled it up to the minimum line.
Put it in Service Mode to run Coolant Valve Test and found that the Battery pump failed, which is what was making that God awful grinding sound.
In the end at least he has the Minimum amount of fluid to safely get it to Louisville. But honestly Tesla Roadside should be able to put this on a bed and get it over to the Service Center ASAP. It just amazes me that she opened a service request with Tesla at 3AM today and they still haven’t requested to bring the vehicle in ASAP…
I say this again, if you’re ever in doubt, please reach out for assistance.
