OPUS is coming to a state near you. And I am not talking about a concerto. OPUS is a centralized or decentralized EMISSION testing system. It is used in NY, decentralized, and Rhode Island, centralized, (as well as in half a dozen other states. [MASS has a even more stringent system] To contrast with Cumberland County, in OPUS the test system talks the to states DMV system and the OBDII scanner is directly interfaced to OPUS. What this means is there is no "Cheat" to get around disabled or not ready readiness tests. This in turn means is tuners must work within the boundaries of the OEMs pollution control system and not disable components in the name of performance. So if your tuner is disabling readiness beware. It also means replacing the ECU in a street driven vehicle (1996 or newer) is going to be an instant fail in OPUS. BTW a similar system to this has been in place in California for years. So when will Maine adopt it.

If you have been on my dyno you see that I use chains rather than straps whenever heat or sharp attachment is present. Here is graphic evidence of what happens when a strap melts from the heat of the header. Also a Dynocom dyno has safety rollers as the last defense of a roll off (This was another dyno brand) That is not going to buff out.

Big day at the track (Bradenton Motorsport Park ) Did the vehicle from Maine (Batten Motorsports ) make it down. Saw a sweet Silverado run. But the surprise was the Jeep Grand Cherokee trapping at 167 mph (in low boost)

Evans Tuning was the subject of a well publicized EPA investigation and subsequent consent decree.

While much of the EPAs recent action seems focused on the diesel tuning tools and market, the Evans case dealt with gas cars. And as you can see from the attached excerpt from the consent decree the tuning tools are common in the local and national market.

Wow, huge fine in this one Who is going to be next. Does the trail stop here or will they go after the tuners that use the tools.

This is one hell of a torture test. But for the brake to heat saturate in 3.5 minutes is telling. Steady state testing often runs that long.

The Frenelsa Eddy brakes in our Dynocom Dyno have better service rating than the Klam Brakes in Mustang Dynos. Not a typical concern for testing or tuning however.

Here is another dyno fail. I understand this was do to a side mount exhaust where an engine block was used to diffuse the exhaust stream. You can see under full power the block slides along the floor and then the exhaust hits the plate glass and shatters it.

Anyone that has been to our shop know we use chain whenever we suspect that restraint will be by something hot. Here you can see a nylon strap let go (likely melted by the header)
