The Hornet is designed to compete in land speed racing events, running against the clock to set top speed times in the flying mile and the standing mile. The SCTA (Southern California Timing Association) and the USFRA (Utah Salt Flats Racing Association) sponsor events at the historic Bonneville Salt Flats near Wendover, UT. Events at Bonneville are to set "flying mile" speed records, that is the cars have 2 miles to get up to speed and then they are clocked for the average speed in mile 3 followed by 2 miles to slow down, this is for the short course. The long course clocks average speed for miles 3,
4, and 5, before the 2 mile slow down. It should be noted that driving on the salt is like driving on wet asphalt, so it takes a combination of HP, aerodynamics and traction to set a record.
The ECTA (East Coast Timing Association) sponsors events at the Blytheville, Arkansas, airport, a former U.S. Air Force Base, these events are for the standing mile, that is the car runs a mile from a standing start and its speed is clocked at the mile (ECTA also clocks at the half mile and 2K for records in those distances).
To date the Hornet's best time was 198.675 MPH in the standing mile at ECTA, naturally aspirated.
