Today's Tip from Old School -- Radiators -- No quick fixes!

So, your radiator has a leak. Bummer. Your friend says to pour some pepper in it. The parts store has this stuff called stop leak for it. What to do?

Well, before you take either step, think about this. The antifreeze that runs through your radiator also runs through your entire motor to keep it cool. So does anything else you pour into the radiator! Pepper tends to gather in tight spots and create clogs...in your motor and your radiator. Stop leak creates a gummy substance which does tend to slow some leaks, but as the gummy stuff travels through your motor, it gums it up as well. The damage done to the motor afterward is usually MUCH more expensive than the original radiator would have been!

So, what to do? If your radiator is leaking, get it to a mechanic. New radiators, depending on the year, make, and model of your car, start around $100.00. Compare this to thousands for having to replace the entire motor, and the answer is easy.

By the way, critters like to nest in cars that sit for a while. Below is a radiator we replaced in a car that could not be driven for a few months. See the rust? That comes from putting water instead of antifreeze in the cooling system. Water rusts over time. Antifreeze won't. Water is a temporary emergency fix only.

Come see us!

Our work on Dayson Garner's vehicle, the Bull Frog, comes to fruition. Leave it to my wonderful boy to figure out how to help people with it! Awesome young man, and his awesome dad. Feeling blessed.

A little bit about brakes, because we want you guys SAFE!!! Routine maintenance is important, and not just because we provide it! ;)

This is part of what I'm learning, spending time in the shop with Lee Torriero, Mechanic Extraordinaire. The first photo here is a new brake pad on the left, and an overworn brake pad on the right. Brakes are an inexpensive fix while it's just pads.

Rotors (2nd and 3rd photo) are what the brake rubs up against to make the friction to stop the car. That worn brake pad was down to the metal. Metal on metal equals a scored (scratched up) rotor that can't stop your car effectively (2nd photo). Rotors are supposed to look like the 3rd photo. That's a new one.

What could have been a quick, inexpensive brake job turned into $200.00 for brakes and rotors because the owner decided to wait to take care of the noisy brakes. Rotors can be turned (shaved) and they will last longer, but only if there's enough left on the rotor. These were too far gone (scrapes were too deep).

The main point is, if your brakes start making noise, PLEASE get them checked! It will save you money in the long run, and KEEP YOU SAFE!
