The 2026 West Louisiana Forestry Festival, Rodeo & Fair is here!

Nolen’s Garage will be closed Thursday, October 8 and Friday, October 9 so our employees can spend some time enjoying the festivities with their families.

We believe life is about more than just work. As a family-owned business, family is important to us, and we believe our employees deserve time to enjoy these moments and make memories with the people who matter most.

The fair runs October 7–11 at the Vernon Parish Fairgrounds, with carnival rides, food, livestock events, and rodeo action throughout the week.

We’ll reopen Monday, October 12 and be ready to get back to work.

We hope everyone has a fun and safe fair weekend and gets a chance to enjoy one of our local traditions!

Day 3 at the ASTA training expo. Training this morning with some amazing people in our industry. We are so blessed to be here and able to learn, grow and improve to better serve our customers.

We made it to ASTA Expo 2026!

We’re in Raleigh this week getting our learning on so we can continue growing, stay current on new technology, repair procedures, diagnostics, and changes within the automotive industry.

At Nolens Garage, we believe in investing in our team and in their future.

That means giving our people opportunities to continue learning, improve their skills, and grow in this industry — because when our team gets better, the service we provide our customers gets better too.

Training like ASTA gives us the opportunity to learn from some of the best in the industry, see new tools and technology, sharpen our diagnostic and repair skills, and bring that knowledge back home to our shop.

We believe continuing education matters. Vehicles keep changing, technology keeps advancing, and we want our team to keep moving forward with it.

Vehicles are changing constantly, and we believe staying current is part of doing the job right. Next week, five members of our team will be attending ASTA training to continue sharpening our skills in diagnostics, repair procedures, technology, shop operations, and customer service.

While part of our team is away, Nolens Garage will remain open at limited capacity, so we appreciate everyone’s patience with scheduling during that time.

We don’t believe training is something you finish — it’s something you keep investing in.

A CODE IS A CLUE — NOT ALWAYS THE ANSWER.

Remember when we talked about the difference between reading a code and actually diagnosing a vehicle?

Here’s a real example from our shop.

This Jeep came to us with DTC P0349 — “Camshaft Position Sensor Circuit Intermittent — Bank 2 Sensor 1.”

Notice what that description actually says:

Circuit intermittent.

It doesn’t say:

Replace the sensor
Replace the camshaft
Or replace any specific part

It tells us the computer is seeing an intermittent problem with that camshaft position signal and gives us a starting point for testing.

Simply reading the code wasn’t enough to tell us what had actually failed.

So we tested.

Using a labscope, we monitored and compared the signals from all four camshafts at the same time. Three of the signals performed as expected.

One didn’t.

The Bank 2 exhaust camshaft signal was noticeably different from the others, giving us the evidence we needed to trace the problem to a failure in the camshaft’s encoder signal.

After replacing the failed exhaust camshaft, we cleared the codes, road-tested the Jeep, and verified the repair.

No returning code. No limp mode. Problem resolved.

That’s the value of proper diagnostic testing.

A scan tool can tell us where the vehicle’s computer saw a problem.

Testing helps us determine why.

Anyone can keep replacing parts until a problem eventually goes away — that’s what we call firing the “parts cannon.”

Our goal at Nolens Garage is different:

Test it. Understand it. Repair the cause. Verify the fix.

Because our customers shouldn’t have to pay for guesswork.

Not everything we find on your vehicle needs to be fixed today.

And we think that's important for you to know.

When your vehicle comes to Nolens Garage, whether we're diagnosing and testing a specific problem or performing one of our inspection services, we don't want to look at only the one thing that brought you through the door and send you on your way without knowing the condition of the rest of the vehicle.

That's one reason our courtesy inspection process is an important part of what we do.

While we're addressing the concern you brought the vehicle in for, we're also looking for things that may affect its safety, reliability, maintenance, or future repair needs.

But finding something doesn't automatically mean it needs to be repaired today.

There is a big difference between:

🔴 This needs attention now.
🟡 This is starting to wear and should be planned for.
🟢 This looks good — no action needed.

Sometimes we'll find something that affects safety or could leave you stranded.

Sometimes we'll find maintenance or wear that you should start planning for.

And sometimes we'll inspect something and tell you:

“You're good. You don't need that yet.”

That's the point of a good inspection.

It's not about creating the biggest repair bill possible.

It's about giving you an accurate picture of your vehicle, documenting what we find, and helping you understand what needs attention now, what should be planned for, and what can wait.

We also offer paid inspection services when a vehicle or concern requires a more detailed level of inspection and testing.

Whether we're diagnosing a problem, performing a paid inspection, or completing our courtesy inspection, our goal is the same:

Give you good information so you can make an informed decision about your vehicle.

Because taking care of your vehicle doesn't always mean doing everything at once.

Sometimes it simply means knowing where you stand and having a plan.

Check Engine Light On? Running Rough? Poor Fuel Mileage? Hesitation or Loss of Power?

One of the biggest misconceptions we see is that plugging in a scan tool and reading a "code" tells you exactly what part needs to be replaced.

It doesn't.

A code gives us a starting point. It tells us where the vehicle's computer detected a problem — but not necessarily what caused it.

Think of it like a ZIP code. The code gets us into the general area where the problem lives. The diagnostic process narrows it down to the right neighborhood, and proper testing helps us find the actual street address — the root cause of the failure.

That testing may include things like:

Fuel delivery
Ignition performance
Airflow and sensor data
Vacuum leaks
Wiring and electrical circuits
Mechanical engine condition
Computer inputs and outputs

Sometimes the failed part is exactly what someone expects.

Sometimes it isn't.

That's why we believe in testing before replacing parts.

Anyone can keep replacing parts until a problem eventually goes away. Around the shop, that's often referred to as firing the “parts cannon.”

The problem is that guessing can get expensive quickly — especially when several perfectly good parts get replaced before the actual cause is found.
