1962 Thunderbird Update — Steering Column
One thing that continues to amaze us about this 1962 Thunderbird is the original wiring system. Considering this car is 64 years old, the way everything was designed and routed is pretty incredible.
And now we’re getting into the steering column, where some of that wiring becomes especially important. The wiring runs up through the column so that things like the turn signals and horn can operate properly.
So, before we put everything back together, we wanted to make sure the column and all of its components were in good working order.
As you can see from these pictures, we completely disassembled the steering column so we could clean, repair and paint the column. We also pulled the wiring out so we could inspect everything and make sure it was working correctly before reassembly.
And when you're taking something apart that hasn't been apart in decades, pictures are your best friend! We took a lot of photos during disassembly so we have excellent references when it comes time to put everything back together.
Because, as we all know... pictures are worth a thousand words!
There’s a lot more going on inside that steering column than you might think. Stay tuned to see how it all comes together!

In our post earlier this week about the 1953 Olds, we talked about how lucky we are to be able to work on both the mechanical and body components at the same time.
We took the opportunity to focus on some of the other components under the hood: the inner wheel skirts, radiator support, and upper and lower sight shields. A sight shield is a piece of metal that covers the open area around the radiator support and grille area.
We started by sandblasting all of the components, followed by metal repair and metal finishing. From there, they were epoxy primed and finally painted.
These may not be the parts that immediately catch your eye, but they are an important part of making the entire engine compartment look right. Because once you finish admiring that beautiful Rocket 88 engine, your eyes naturally move to everything surrounding it. And those big, beautiful pieces deserve to look just as good!

1980 Camaro Z28 — Time to Play Electrical Detective!

We left off on the 1980 Camaro Z28 with the old, cracked dashboard removed and the new dash installed.
But before we completely put everything back together, there was some important work to do behind the dash.
We meticulously went through the wiring harness to investigate several electrical issues this Camaro is experiencing, including a parasitic draw, inoperable gauges, a clock and horn that aren't working, and even some burnt wires.
When you're dealing with electrical problems, you can't just start replacing parts and hope for the best. You have to take the time to trace the wiring, find the problem and figure out why it happened in the first place.
There's a lot going on behind that beautiful new dashboard—and we're determined to get it all working the way it should before we button everything up.
Stay tuned as we dig deeper into the electrical system of this Z28!

1962 Thunderbird Update — Steering Wheel & Column
As we continue making progress on this ’62 Thunderbird, we’ve turned our attention to the steering column and steering wheel.
The steering wheel had several cracks, so we stripped all of the paint and got down to the original material. We then “V’d” the areas that needed repair. What does that mean? We actually create a small V-shaped void along the crack, giving us room to fill the repair and create a much stronger bond than simply filling over the crack.
Once the repairs were made, we epoxy primed the wheel. We’ll go over it carefully to make sure everything is just right before moving on to the final primer.
Restoration is all about the details—and sometimes it’s the steps you don’t see that make the biggest difference in the finished product.
Stay tuned for more updates on the steering wheel AND to see what we accomplish with the steering column!

Mechanical? Bodywork? Mechanical? Bodywork?

When it comes to the 1953 Oldsmobile, we have so many choices when it comes to where to work and which direction to go!

Now that the engine, transmission, and most of the major components are installed, we decided it was time to step inside and tackle the firewall.
First, we removed the old firewall insulator pad and seals. We then prepped and painted the area where the new firewall insulation and seals would be installed.
Finally, we installed the new firewall insulator pad and seals, getting this area ready for the next phase.
This step allows us to move forward with installing the heater box and dash components, which need to be in place before we can install the gauges in the dash.
One step leads to another in a restoration, and sometimes the best way forward is determined by what needs to happen next!
Stay tuned as we keep moving this Olds forward.

1962 Thunderbird — It Takes a Team
One of the things we’ve learned over the years is that you don’t have to know everything—you just have to know who to ask.
When you’re working on the extensive wiring within a 1962 Thunderbird, there are times when the answer isn’t sitting in a manual or immediately obvious on the car. That’s when experience, teamwork, and being willing to learn from the people around you really matter.
At Hullco, we rely on the knowledge and experience of the people around us, bounce ideas off each other, and work together to figure out the right way to approach the job.
That’s what makes restoration a team effort. Different experiences, different skills, one goal—doing it right.
And sometimes, the best part of the job is learning something new from the guy standing next to you.

This 1980 Camaro Z28 has really great bones for a 46 year old car! It’s here for a lot of little things so that it can be back on the road safely and looking like it just came off the showroom floor. The dash was worn from sun and age, so we replaced it with a new one. The new one had to be painted to match the rest of the dash and interior. Luckily, the customer was able to provide us with the proper color paint to complete this task. While the dash is out, we will focus on ensuring all of the gauges function properly like they did back in 1980.

We left off our last post on the 1962 Thunderbird saying that the fresh air vents needed to be restored. We took the car’s left fresh air vent and an air vent from the donor car and fabricated them into one complete vent. Thankfully, the right air vent was in good shape!

In addition to restoring the fresh air vents, we’re also working on portions of the dash.

These pictures show one particular section of the dash that needed some attention. We carefully took the pieces apart, addressed the damage, and prepared them for paint.

It’s always amazing to see the transformation as we bring these original pieces back to life! Stay tuned for more progress on this Thunderbird.

It's so fun to see all of the progress on the 1953 Oldsmobile!
Since our last post, there has been a lot happening. We’ve installed the gas tank and hooked up the fuel lines, installed the brakes and brake lines, and got the master cylinder and brake pedal rod in place.
We’ve also installed the front sections of the exhaust. The steering box is currently apart and being cleaned, while the radiator has been tested, cleaned, and repainted.
You can really start to see this Oldsmobile coming back to life!

The 1930 Model A pickup has reached a pivotal milestone this week!

All of the major components of this truck—including the running boards, front and rear fenders, engine pans, grille shell, and more—have now been fully blocked and painted. You can see in the pictures just how beautiful everything is turning out!
Up next, we’ll be focusing on assembling the bed. That includes installing the new rivets with the correct waffle print, just like the originals.
This truck is really starting to come together! Stay tuned for more progress.
