I used to run an independent repair shop, so I understand that shops need to make a profit. Parts markup is normal. Labor is normal. Warranty coverage, comebacks, rent, payroll, insurance, scan tools, and overhead are real business costs.

But consumers should also understand how high the markup can be.

A 270% markup means the customer is paying about 3.7 times the shop’s cost.

A 350% markup means the customer is paying about 4.5 times the shop’s cost.

That is a massive spread between cost and sell price.

This is not about saying every independent shop is bad. There are plenty of honest shops doing quality work.

This is about helping consumers ask better questions before approving a large repair bill:

What brand of parts are being installed?

Are they OEM, premium aftermarket, or economy aftermarket?

What warranty comes with the repair?

Is the parts pricing based on dealer parts or aftermarket parts?

Can the shop explain the estimate clearly?

Being informed is not being difficult.

It is protecting your money

2019 Nissan Pathfinder. Only 46,000 miles.

Engine will not turn by hand, even with the belts removed.

That means this is not an accessory issue.

The engine is locked up.

And when you see heavy sludge inside the engine, lack of maintenance becomes the most likely cause.

Low miles do not always mean a clean bill of health.

This is why inspections matter before you buy.

1934 Chevrolet Sedan auction find.
Beautiful paint, chrome, wide whites, and classic lines.

Looks amazing, but with cars like this, condition matters.
Inspect before you bid.

The mystery Lincoln crossed the block… $1,000 on offer.
That tells you everything and nothing at the same time.

Custom cars can hide custom problems.
Inspect before you buy.

When the Lincoln comes with bed liner and mystery attachments… it’s probably time for a pre-purchase inspection.

Jeep Rubicon cold start revealed engine noise that could point to internal wear and a very expensive repair.

This is exactly why a cold start matters. Once the engine is warm, some noises can quiet down or disappear.

Don’t fall in love with the Jeep before you know what you’re buying.

Inspect before you buy.

2019 Buick Encore with a blown head gasket.

If you notice your vehicle’s temperature gauge rising, pull over as soon as you can safely. Don’t keep driving and turn a simple problem into a major engine repair.

BMW inspection confirms body and paint damage on both sides. Photos can hide damage, flaws, and prior repairs. A pre-purchase inspection helps uncover what sellers and pictures may not show.

After a few weeks away, I’m getting back to what I enjoy most—helping people make informed decisions before buying a vehicle.

For those who have followed Vegas Vehicle Inspections, thank you for your patience and support.

Today’s inspection reminder: a cold start on a 2013 BMW 330i revealed a check engine light, ABS light, brake warning light, exhaust rattle, and visible smoke. These are the kinds of issues that can be missed when a vehicle is already warmed up before you arrive.

A pre-purchase inspection is one of the least expensive ways to protect yourself from an expensive mistake.
