Women remain underrepresented in trucking—but that doesn’t have to define your future:

📍 WISCONSIN: Approximately 7% of valid CDL holders were women in 2024.

🇺🇸 NATIONAL: The 2026–27 Women In Trucking survey found women represented 7%–10.5% of CDL truck drivers across participating company-size groups.

🚛 CAREER OPPORTUNITIES: The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects approximately 214,500 openings annually for heavy and tractor-trailer truck drivers from 2025–2035, including openings to replace departing workers.

You don’t need to arrive knowing how to drive a truck. Training is where you begin building the skills, knowledge and confidence.

Whether you’re starting your first career or ready for something new, consider what earning your CDL could make possible.

🚛 Do you need a CDL in Wisconsin? Even a pickup pulling a trailer can qualify!

✅ Class A: A combination of 26,001 lbs or more, with a towed unit over 10,000 lbs.

✅ Class B: A single vehicle of 26,001 lbs or more, including when towing a trailer of 10,000 lbs or less.

🛻 Pulling a trailer with your pickup? Bumper-pull, gooseneck or fifth-wheel—the hitch style alone doesn’t determine whether you need a CDL. Wisconsin considers the highest applicable manufacturer weight rating, registered weight or actual weight, so an empty trailer doesn’t automatically mean you’re exempt.

🚌 CDL requirements also cover vehicles designed or used to carry 16 or more people, including the driver, and vehicles hauling hazardous materials requiring placards. Appropriate endorsements are required.

Certain exemptions apply, including qualifying farm, emergency and recreational vehicle operations. Check your specific situation with Wisconsin DMV.

🚛 Meet Khrysta, our new Trainer and Examiner!

We’re excited to welcome Khrysta to the Dark Horse CDL School team! Along with training students and conducting exams, she’ll be managing our social media so you can get to know our school, our team, and the work we do.

From 2020–2023, Khrysta was a stay-at-home mom and waitress before earning her CDL in 2023. She gained hands-on experience working for a farm, hauling manure, milk and whey, and crops, before transitioning into office work. In 2025, she earned her trainer and examiner certifications.

She holds the following CDL endorsements: • H — Hazardous Materials • N — Tanker • P — Passenger • S — School Bus • T — Doubles/Triples

Khrysta has a passion for helping students build their skills and confidence. Her favorite part of training is teaching pre-trip inspections and helping students understand what to check and why it matters.

She’s looking forward to bringing fresh ideas, contributing her experience, and becoming a valuable part of the Dark Horse team.
