RAINY RED, WHITE AND BLUE - A view last evening from the Lansing ferry shuttling a few vehicles across the Mississippi River and under the newly "topped off" bridge connecting IA with WI. Anyone in this NE Iowa / SE MN area the past few days knows the scene — lots of rain and windshield wipers slappin' time.

GAP CLOSED! — The connection is complete! 🌉✨
Kraemer has made the final connections to the top of the center span completing the outline of the new bridge, reports the Iowa DOT. --Bolting work will continue through July. Some bolts won’t be tightened until after the concrete deck is poured so the weight of the deck can be accounted for. ***If the schedule holds, the hope is to start the first of three deck pours in late July. More updates to come as progress continues. --Iowa DOT photos

FLAG FLIES FOR THE FOURTH - This photo was made June 12th, the day the center span of the new Lansing bridge was raised into position — an American flag rippling amid a backdrop tangle of iron and steel cables.

HE STEERED MISSISSIPPI RIVER SHIPS OVER FIVE DECADES - Retired tow boat captain Lee Hendrix will share his stories with you Wednesday, July 8, 6:30 p.m. at the Ferryville Village Hall in Ferryville, Wisconsin. Once the river bug bit him he got his tow boat license back in the mid-70s. In 1993, Lee became the pilot for the passenger boat, the American Queen, and continued in that role for many years. He later was employed by the US Army Corps of Engineers as a pilot of the largest tow boat in the world, the M/V Mississippi. After his retirement from the Corps, he returned to the American Queen as a “river-lorian,” a first class story teller. His long career includes teaching, developing curriculum for schools about the Mississippi River, and piloting casino boats in the Quad Cities. He has since written a book about his adventures called "Peep Light: Stories of a Mississippi River Boat Captain" which will be for sale after his program. The event is free to the public. Treats will be available. Donations accepted.

SO WHAT'S UP WITH THOSE GAPS AT THE TOP OF THE CENTER SPAN? - That's a question on some of our minds — the center span of the new Lansing, Iowa, bridge across the Mississippi River is in place but the iron pieces at top are not connected — YET. The official word via email from the Iowa DOT's Clayton Burke, project manager for the new bridge: "Kraemer will be closing these gaps soon as they make the final connections of the truss. The final connections of the bridge are the most challenging as the ends of the bridge have to be lowered and raised to allow the pieces to slide in and line up." Kraemer is just starting that closing process now. Photo: a posterized view of the bridge showing the gaps at the top of the center span.

WHOLE IS GREATER THAN THE SUM OF ITS PARTS - The center span in place as of Friday night, this image captured from the Iowa DOT's live EarthCam feed, shows a whole connected bridge. Still, lots to be done.
