Mechanics vs. Doctors: A Perspective Most People Overlook
It’s no secret, many people think mechanic shops are full of crooks. But if you stop and think about it, mechanics and doctors have a lot in common.
When your body feels off, you visit a doctor. They run tests, perform scans, and charge you for a diagnosis, not just the fix. The same goes for vehicles. We don’t have X-ray vision; we can’t instantly know what’s wrong without proper testing and diagnostics. A check engine light is no different from a symptom, both require skilled diagnosis, a check engine light isn’t the fix, it’s the starting point of the exam.
Even doctors make mistakes or misdiagnose patients from time to time, yet no one calls for a boycott or a “cancel culture” movement against the medical field. Meanwhile, mechanics who perform hundreds of honest, quality repairs can get labeled as dishonest after one misunderstanding and we don’t get to “practice” our field as doctors do.
Now, it’s true, not every shop operates the same. Some prioritize quantity over quality, rushing jobs just to get to the next ticket. Others recommend unnecessary repairs. Sound familiar? In the medical world, we call that “big pharma” prescribing meds that line pockets more than they heal people.
Here’s another difference worth noting: anyone can open a mechanic shop. There’s no license to prove integrity, experience, or business understanding like there is for a doctor. Some techs undercharge, thinking low prices will dominate the market, making their pricing more attractive for you, but soon realize overhead costs crush their dreams, warranties disappear, and customers are left stranded. And don’t get me started on mobile technicians, many operate without insurance or licensing, leaving customers vulnerable.
The moral of the story: not all mechanics are shady. Just like finding a trustworthy doctor, you have to find a shop that values honesty, craftsmanship, and your safety above all else. In today’s world, where social media can make anything look professional, it’s more important than ever to do your research. ie: read reviews and meet the team members working on your vehicles.
At the end of the day, your vehicle deserves the same care you’d expect for your own health, skilled hands, real expertise, and genuine integrity. Not the cheapest price tag.
Feel free to stop by and meet the team.
