After 14 incredible years of serving Columbus County through Shade Tree Detailing & More, it's time for a new adventure.

Today we had the opportunity to detail both of these Hondas, and for that we're grateful. Every vehicle we work on is a chance to earn someone's trust, and we never take that for granted.

I genuinely feel bad for people who jump into the detailing business thinking it's easy money.

They watch a few TikToks. They see a couple YouTube videos. They see established shops with a parking lot full of vehicles and think, "I can do that."

What they don't see are the years behind it.

They don't see the mistakes. The ruined weekends. The slow seasons. The advertising bills. The payroll. The chemicals. The insurance. The rent. The water. The electricity. The equipment. The stress of wondering if enough work is coming through the gate next week.

People see a $300 detail and think you're making $300.

You're not.

If you've got employees, that money starts disappearing fast. Three or four good people can easily cost you thousands every month before you've paid a single other bill.

And here's the hard truth:

Most customers don't want to pay someone to learn.

If your only experience comes from TikTok and YouTube, you're asking people to trust their vehicle and their money to someone still figuring it out. That's a tough sell in a small town where reputation means everything.

I've been doing this for over 40 years.

When Shade Tree reopened after I stepped away for a couple of months following my father's death, I didn't have to launch a huge advertising campaign. I made a post saying we were back, and the work showed up. Not because we're special. Not because we're lucky. Because trust takes years to build.

That's something no social media video can teach.

We aren't a car wash that occasionally details cars.

We're a detail shop that occasionally washes cars.

There's a difference.

We turn away simple wash jobs almost every day. Not because we don't appreciate the business, but because our focus has always been on higher-end detailing. That's the culture we've built.

I believe one of the biggest mistakes new operators make is trying to be everything at once.

Car wash.

Detail shop.

Ceramic coating shop.

Paint correction shop.

Fleet service.

Mobile service.

You can't be great at everything.

At some point, you have to decide who you are.

For anyone thinking about opening a detail shop, my advice is simple:

Spend a couple of years working for someone who already does it successfully. Learn the process. Learn the business. Learn the mistakes on somebody else's dime.

Then go build your dream.

Because detailing can absolutely be a great business.

But it isn't easy money.

And it definitely isn't as simple as grabbing a bucket, a pressure washer, and an Instagram account.
