What makes a “conical” spring a conical?

Left to right you see a Conical design like our TK-1813 LS spring that gives you .700” lift from a light weight single, high rate progressive spring…each coil has a slightly smaller diameter making its natural resonant frequency change as it is compressed and the lower coils stack up.

This gives amazing high rpm stability for a valve train without unnecessary high loads and stress like many other dual or triple springs.

In the center, you see a typical “beehive” spring which is mostly just a straight cylinder with only the top few coils getting smaller. This acts more like a normal linear rate spring but gives the added advantage of a smaller, lighter retainer where the active mass is more critical up near the top.

Finally, you have the classic cylinder style spring. “Old reliable” for so many applications…linear spring rates and loads created as a function of wire diameter, number of coils and outside diameter.

In order for a true Conical design to work well you should be able to visually see a lot of “taper” to the cone shape.

When there is little change from bottom to top in outside diameter, the spring will continue to act like a standard cylindrical design and not gain the benefits inherent to a true conical shape!

The TK-1813 is a light weight, high rate excellent performer for stiff valvetrain systems like LS engines and shaft mount rockers!

They can accommodate up to .700” lift and over 9,000 rpm on well designed cam and rocker systems and give long life while they are at it!

The combination of Ovate wire shape, paired with a conical body delivers terrific harmonics and lower stress while allowing more lift!

Who said a Conical doesn’t work in an LS?

How about 9000+RPM while we wait?

We used the
Summit Racing Equipment 8700SR3 Solid Roller .707” Lift with some morel solid lifters, Comp XD-A pushrods and BTR Shaft Mount rockers on Stock LS3 Valves

Thanks to the crew at Summit Racing Equipment for all the help getting this spring off the ground!
