Tonight, our ever-growing town/city has experienced two, motorcycle vs. vehicle accidents. While we're always here to help with breakdowns and stuck vehicles, sadly, most accidents are avoidable. This post aims to raise motorcycle awareness. Please follow these tips to drive more aware, especially with the cooling weather and increased bike riders on our streets. Take a moment to read and become more aware.
# # # 1. Check Mirrors and Blind Spots:
- Always check your mirrors and blind spots before changing lanes or merging. Motorcycles can be harder to see due to their smaller size.
# # # 2. Use Turn Signals:
- Signal your intentions early and clearly. This helps motorcyclists anticipate your movements and react accordingly.
# # # 3. Maintain a Safe Following Distance:
- Keep a safe distance between your car and the motorcycle in front of you. Motorcycles can stop more quickly than cars, and a greater distance allows for better reaction time. Stay back at least two car lengths from motorcycles!
# # # 4. Be Extra Cautious at Intersections:
- Many motorcycle accidents occur at intersections. Always look for motorcycles when turning left or right, and yield the right of way when required.
# # # 5. Watch for Lane Splitting:
- In some areas, motorcyclists may legally split lanes. Be aware that they may be closer than you think and be prepared to give them space.
# # # 6. Avoid Distractions:
- Stay focused on the road. Avoid using your phone or engaging in other distractions that can take your attention away from driving.
# # # 7. Be Mindful of Weather Conditions:
- Inclement weather can affect visibility and road conditions. Be especially watchful for motorcycles in rain, fog, or snow.
# # # 8. Give Motorcycles Space:
- When passing a motorcycle, give them plenty of space. A good rule of thumb is to leave at least a full lane of space between your vehicle and the motorcycle.
# # # 9. Look for Motorcycles at Night:
- Motorcycles can be less visible at night. Use extra caution when driving after dark, and ensure your headlights are properly adjusted.
# # # 10. Be Aware of Riders’ Behavior:
- Motorcyclists may maneuver differently than cars. They may accelerate quickly or change lanes more often. Be prepared for their movements.
# # # 11. Respect Their Right of Way:
- Just like any other vehicle, motorcycles have the right of way. Always yield to them when required.
# # # 12. Educate Yourself:
- Consider taking a motorcycle awareness course or reading up on motorcycle safety. Understanding how motorcyclists think and behave can help you drive more
