Hello, Stan's Family! We are here (late at night) trying to monitor and follow up on the warning we received by email this week that Xcel Energy plans to disconnect our power tomorrow at 12pm, and possibly keep it disconnected for as much as 72 hours.
I (Scott Elmore, owner) and my team are EXTREMELY disappointed that Xcel appears to be arbitrary and unwilling to provide information beyond what we received.
A number of our customers were affected by the Marshall fire, many losing their homes completely, along with an employee that lost possessions and was displaced from his home.
As we learned about these customer's losses, for six months or more, we refused to take payment from these customers for their repair needs.
As I've said in the past, we don't generally "toot our own horn," but sometimes I think it's appropriate. We gave away MANY tens of thousands of dollars of auto repair to those Marshall fire victims. And we did it quietly, and without fanfare, and without a need for praise.
For THAT reason, I am personally completely and utterly fed up that Xcel can even send the email that they did. After recently making a payment of $640 million dollars to settle multiple lawsuits for their failure to repair and maintain their equipment that caused the Marshall fire, NOW instead of maintaining and repairing their equipment, they are going to cause us and up to 550,000 others to be without power for up to 72 hours?
You all should be up in arms about this. The public utilities commission in Colorado is in charge of regulating Xcel. 100% of the members of the PUC have been nominated by our Governor, Jared Polis. Governor Polis is responsible for the actions of his PUC appointees, or at least holding them accountable.
This is **NOT** a political post. I'm not saying I'm supportive of one political party or the other. I assure you that under these circumstances, if the appointees were from a governor of the other party (but it's been so long I can't remember anyway) I'd say the same thing...
You should be outraged! There is no reason that up to or more than a half million people should have their power turned off as a "precaution" nor thousands of businesses turn people away for the same reason.
SO...we may (probably) lose power tomorrow. We have some plans with solar generators and battery backups to keep our internet alive (as long as central offices don't also lose power and kill our internet) and stay in communication with our customers.
We CAN'T do somethings like lift vehicles (or sadly, bring them back down off the lift) without grid power.
But we will do EVERYTHING that we can to continue to serve our customers and our community like we've done for the last 52 years, so please call or send us an email or text if you have questions. As long as some form of grid is up, we'll be doing our best to serve you.
AND. You should take a minute to let your Colorado PUC know that this is NOT ok. As an electrical monopoly in the area, Xcel should be required to inspect, maintain, and repair their equipment in a manner that not only keeps the public safe, but allows residents, businesses, hospitals, and schools to maintain business as usual, at least during normal weather patterns that affect this area throughout the entire year.
Thank you, please stay safe.
