Ed Iskenderian was not just part of automotive history — he helped create it. Long before hot rodding became mainstream, before performance racing was an industry, Ed was there at the beginning. After serving his country during World War II, he returned home with a passion for speed and innovation, and began experimenting with engine performance at a time when very few people truly understood it.
From a small garage and with relentless curiosity, Ed went on to revolutionize engine performance through camshaft design, founding what would become one of the most influential names in motorsports history. His work shaped drag racing, dry lakes racing, Bonneville speed runs, and generations of racers who followed. If an engine ran harder, faster, or stronger, chances are Ed’s influence was somewhere inside it.
Beyond the machines, Ed was a famous race car driver, a true competitor who understood racing from the driver’s seat as well as the workbench. He lived the life fully — not chasing fame, but chasing excellence. His passion helped define Southern California hot-rod culture and spread across the world, inspiring racers, builders, and dreamers everywhere.
To live 104 years is to witness the world change many times over. Ed didn’t just watch those changes — he stayed relevant, respected, and deeply loved by the community he helped build. Even as decades passed, his name remained timeless, spoken with admiration by those who truly understood what he gave to the sport.
Ed Iskenderian lived life at full throttle — with integrity, curiosity, and heart. His legacy isn’t only found in trophies or history books, but in the sound of engines, the passion of racers, and the generations he inspired to push limits and never stop learning.
Today we mourn his passing, but we celebrate a life that was rich, complete, and meaningful beyond measure. It was an honor for me to even begin this picture with him last year during Benedict castle Concourso.
Rest peacefully, Ed Iskenderian.
A pioneer. A racer. A legend.
