Check Engine Light | 2017 Audi A3 Sportback e-tron Premium

🗣️ Let’s talk shop.
This week, a customer came in with a problem that we’ve come across a few times or so with a 2017 Audi A3 e-tron. The “Nothing Seems to be Wrong” problem. What does that mean? Well, basically, a check engine light comes on, seemingly, out of nowhere, and you try to take some notes as to what the problem is. So what do you do? You check the brakes, nothing. Then listen for any odd sounds, nothing. You feel around for different kinds of vibrations, nothing. So, what could it be? Let’s dive in.

🔍 Diagnosis
A check engine light doesn’t always necessarily mean something bad is happening under. Sometimes, it could be your Audi telling you that one of your systems needs attention before it becomes a bigger problem.

On this particular Audi A3 Sportback e-tron Premium (that’s a mouthful), we started with our diagnostic process, not the “guessing game” like some other people might initially do. We smoke-tested the EVAP system looking for leaks, but found none.

Now this is where things start to get more interesting. We performed a functional test of the EVAP leak detection pump and found that when the pump was activated, smoke was escaping directly from the pump.

🧰 What Needs to Be Done
With the test confirming the EVAP leak detection pump had failed, we let the customer know that it now required replacement. Customer approved. We replaced the part and performed another test just to make sure we could verify no other leaks.

💡 Pro Tip:
We’ve said it once, and we’ll say it again. Don’t ignore your check engine light. European vehicles like this Audi use delicate emissions and EVAP systems that require the right scanning tools, testing procedures, and the right experience in order to pinpoint the main issue.

Brake Fluid Leak | 2017 Land Rover Discovery

🗣️ Let’s talk shop.
This week we got a 2017 Land Rover Discovery in. One of the many we’ve gotten in the shop before. Customer told us that braking had become weird and they noticed the pedal would sink more than usual. Whenever we hear anything in regards to brake problems we like to address it immediately so this was a good place to start looking into the issue. Let’s dive in.

🔍 Diagnosis
After lifting the car and inspecting the brake system, we found brake fluid leaking onto the tire and surrounding components. Once we removed the wheel for a closer look, we found the source: a hole in the brake line.

A brake fluid leak isn’t something to put off. Your brake system depends on maintaining the appropriate hydraulic pressure or else your brakes and performance could be compromised.

🧰 What Needs to Be Done
The damaged brake line needed to be replaced. After the repair, we recommended a brake flush to remove any contaminated fluid and make sure to refill the system with the appropriate brake fluid.

💡 Pro Tip:
If you ever see a brake warning light, you feel a soft or spongy (not firm) pedal, fluid around your tires or any kind of change in brake performance, whatever you do, DON’T IGNORE IT. Brake systems can go from a small leak to a major safety repair very quickly. Not to mention if you’re driving you can become a danger to others.

🎯 Result:
With the brake line replaced and a fluid flush and refill the Land Rover was back to its healthy performance and back on the road to drive another day.

Overheating | 2017 Jaguar F-Pace Premium

🗣️ Let’s talk shop.
Sometimes an overheating concern isn’t as simple as a bad thermostat or low coolant. For instance, a 2017 Jaguar F-Pace Premium came in that showed us why proper diagnostics matter. Let’s dive in.

🔍 Diagnosis
Now, on the first day the customer came in, we test drove the F-Pace for approximately 8 miles with no overheating or obvious cooling-system concerns. The next day, during another road test, the A/C all of a sudden began blowing warm air while the engine temperature gauge stayed at its normal operating position. We pulled over immediately and inspected the vehicle.

Under the hood, we found the engine cooling fan wasn’t working, and the active grille shutter (the radiator shutter) was fully closed.

After shutting the vehicle off and restarting it, the cooling fan came back on, and the active grille shutter opened and began working normally. That intermittent behavior was the key clue we needed.

🧰 What Needs to Be Done
A diagnostic scan revealed two fault codes related to the active grille shutter. We removed the front bumper and tested the shutter circuit. Power, ground, and CAN communication were all present and working well.

Based on the testing, the active grille shutter appears to be intermittently sticking in the closed position.
So we replaced the active grille shutter/radiator assembly, then performed an extended road test to verify the repair and confirmed the concern was resolved.

💡 Pro Tip:
Intermittent cooling-system problems can be tricky to catch. A vehicle may drive perfectly during one test drive and show a serious fault the next day. That’s why appropriate diagnostics, scan data, electrical checks, and extended road tests are very important, especially with the modern-day European car.

🎯 Result:
The car is back to blowing cool air, and the overheating issue is resolved. Happy customer, happy shop.

PCV Valve Replacement | 2018 Range Rover Evoque

🗣️ Let’s talk shop.
We had another 2018 Range Rover Evoque come into the shop this week with an engine that just wasn’t running the way that it should. What’s the culprit this time? Let’s dive in.

🔍 Diagnosis
The PCV valve was found to be faulty and leaking vacuum. That unwanted vacuum leak was disrupting the engine’s air/fuel balance and causing the engine to surge, a symptom that can make your drive feel inconsistent and frustrating, per our customer’s feelings.

🧰 What Needs to Be Done
So what’s recommended? Of course, replacing the faulty PCV valve. A properly functional crankcase ventilation system is important for maintaining the correct vacuum and airflow within the engine.

💡 Pro Tip:
If your vehicle starts surging, idling roughly, or behaving differently, don’t automatically assume it’s a major engine problem. A vacuum leak or crankcase ventilation issue can create noticeable symptoms.

So be careful not to improperly diagnose the problem. Take it to a local European auto repair specialist, because guessing at parts can get expensive real quick. Remember, testing first saves time, money, and a whole lot of headache.

🎯 Result:
We identified, documented, and made the proper recommendation the car needed. For this Evoque, we addressed the faulty PCV valve and the next step toward restoring the engine to proper operation.

It really doesn’t matter whether it’s a Range Rover, Mercedes, Audi, Volvo, Porsche, BMW, etc, the goal remains all the same: find the problem, explain it to the customer clearly, and recommend the appropriate repairs. Simple.
