Tow Truck Driver Job Description
A tow trucker, also known as a tow truck driver or operator, offers a variety of vehicle-related repair and hauling services to non-commercial and commercial vehicle drivers, police, municipalities and even other tow truckers. To perform this job professionally and effectively ectively, you need to know the types of tasks employers and customers expect you to be able to complete.
Customer Service
When a tow trucker receives a call, he must respond in a timely fashion and provide excellent customer service skills on scene. Excellent customer service includes greeting the customer courteously and with a smile. A tow truck operator also needs to show empathy when customers are upset. He must speak professionally and clearly and use active listeningskills to determine the nature of the customer's problem. He also needs to show expertise with different types of vehicles, parts, vehicle maintenance and repair.
Minor Repair
If a tow truck driver determines that an issue is minor, his duties include offering minor repair services. For example, he might reconnect parts, test and attempt to jump-start a dead battery, in&ate a &at tire, swap a &at tire with a spare, or provide enough gas to the customer to get to a nearby gas station. If the customer is locked out of a vehicle, he might also provide lockout services, this service may also include kneeling , bending and lifting items.TowingTow truckers are also expected to offer emergency roadside towing services when dealing with situations that they can’t (x, such as large repair problems or totaled vehicles. They also offer a variety of other towing services, such as police impound and abandoned vehicle towing. A tow truck driver must know how to use towing related tools, such as wheel straps, motorcycle straps, safety chains and J hooks, and they must appropriately secure a vehicle so that it doesn’t suffer any damage during transport, this may also include stepping up into the truck or onto the bed of a truck, it may also include laying on your back to hook up a vehicle
Equipment Maintenance
Tow truck drivers must also regularly maintain their trucks and other equipment. For example, drivers must clean the inside and outside of their trucks to stay organized and appear professional to customers. Additionally, a driver must follow general and safety inspection procedures, including checking his vehicle’s battery charge, windshield wiper blade edges, tire tread thickness and air pressure and &uid levels. He should perform minor maintenance, such as re(lling low &uids and changing old wiper blades or tires, as needed.
Administrative
Tow truckers follow up with their dispatchers regularly to provide status updates, as well as estimated time of arrivals to vehicles, residences, service stations, impound lots or junkyards. A driver also completes a variety of paperwork, such as a daily log of tow truck inspection and repair activity, missing or stolen tools reports, travel and mileage logs and a services rendered report, turn in all gas receipts. With customers, tow truckers usually provide an itemized invoice and a handwritten or credit card receipt
