Lonnie M. (Phu Loc) Myers, Col. USMC Retired, PGR RC La Grande, OR
Col. Lonnie Myers, USMC Retired, passed away Friday 16 Feb. 2024 at his home in La Grande, Or, at the age of 80. Lonnie was raised at the Mr. Emily Lumber Camp in Starkey, OR until 1955. He graduated from La Grande High School and Eastern Oregon College (now EOU) with a bachelor’s degree in education.
In October 1965, Lonnie was commissioned as a 2nd Lt in the United States Marine Corp. His career spanned more than 27 years. He deployed numerous times to the Republic of Viet Nam serving as an artillery battery commander, and tactical air observer with the 1st Marine Division. He also served with the 1st Air/Naval Gunfire Liaison Company. He commanded at multiple levels and high-level staff positions during his career.
Upon retirement, Lonnie returned to EOU and received his master’s degree in education and began teaching at the La Grande Middle School teaching social studies until 2005. Lonnie was a Lifetime Member of VFW Post 4060, and active member of the La Grande American Legion Post 43, serving as a founding member and former Director of Chapter 43 American Legion Riders. He also served 2 terms as Post 43 Commander. Lonnie spent many years supporting the Patriot Guard Riders in Eastern Oregon, serving as a Ride Captain in NE Oregon for many of those years. He participated in or led many missions spanning Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and Montana. He was one of us.
Lonnie, we salute your service to God, Family, Country, the USMC, and your fellow Veterans. Your mission is complete. RIP my friend.
