This is your Lone Star Bavarian public service announcement for the week.

I had a client in late last week for service with his new BMW. We called him with an estimate for what was needed, which was just an oil change and a filter....it's new and low miles. He calls back a few minutes later and tells me that he can't get the work done because it will void his warranty according to the service adviser or salesman at the dealer.

There are so many that believe this as they have been lied to by someone at the dealership and they don't realize it. It is actually a violation of federal law for any manufacturer to do that so it is 100% untrue. Any work that you would pay for at the dealer can be done by any non-dealer including yourself.

In fact, the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, which is enforced by the FTC, makes it illegal for manufacturers or dealers to claim that your warranty is void or to deny coverage under your warranty simply because someone other than the dealer did the work. ... The warranty would still be in effect for other parts of your car.
