Exterior Design Service

Exterior Design Service For over 35 years Exterior Design Service has been creating one-of-a-kind gardens of quality workman I can help you plan what to do and show you how to do it.

Have you ever noticed how many people don’t pay the same attention to their outside design as they do to their inside design? While attending UTK, I worked in and visited local gardens and noticed many homes beautifully decorated with co-ordinated furniture, carpets, and drapes in harmonious styles and colors, accented with perfectly chosen art and accessories. But all too often I walked outside t

o a scene of pink-flowering dogwoods, with purple and orange azaleas, bordered with red tulips. There was no color matching, no apparent design, no interesting plants – a complete disconnect from design principles they clearly knew and were interested in. This was the inspiration for my company name, Exterior Design Service, to suggest to people that they should expect the same quality, good design, and attention to detail outside as they have inside. Over the 35 years we have been in business, we have designed, installed, and maintained gardens that reflect this vision on new sites and also while renovating old gardens. We focus on creating a unique garden customized to each homeowner’s taste, budget, available time for maintenance, etc. After the client’s needs are known, we work out a custom plan to phase in all work most effectively, while staying within the budget. Along with the full service work, we are starting to install specialty gardens, for people who want a spot garden created without signing up to have the entire property landscaped. We can design herb gardens, rose gardens, Japanese gardens, new perennial borders for year round blooming, tropical spots by swimming pools, or any theme idea you can dream up. Another new offering is consulting for do-it-yourself gardeners. We are aiming at customers who want professional advice and quidance, but want to do the work themselves. I will personally help you analyze your site, discuss design ideas, advise you on what to remove and what to plant, diagnose sick plants and tell you what to do for them, show you how to prune almost anything, and help you plan a maintenance schedule to keep your garden beautiful year-round, for starters. You ask the questions, we’ll answer them and follow up when you need our help. Call now to plan your dream garden:

I’m Lichen This!
Today, when taking a walk at our house, I saw this wonderful blue Lichen! I have never seen such a distinctly blue Lichen! Has anyone else? It formed on an old Slippery Elm stump.

My Cucuamelons thought the mothership had landed when we bought a new watermelon! The watermelon is very small which gives you an idea of how tiny the Cucaumelons are. They are still producing even in November! ,

Yay Naked Ladies in the woods!!! Yes indeed, Lycoris squamigera, hah! My all time fav common name of any plant. They are called this because the flower stalks appear without any foliage. They are also called Pink Surprise Lillies though for some reason I like the other better. These do well in the shade because when the foliage is up the leaves are off and so they get plenty of sun.

My favorite “new to me annual” this year is this beautiful globe amarath, Gomphrena pulchella 'Truffala Pink' in this urn with the little spreading Angelonia- 'Angel Mist Spreading Dark Purple'.  I have tried for years to grow the Buddy series of Gomphrena in beds, with only moderate success, but this new variety is amazing!

Another picture of the beautiful Double Tiger Lily, Lillium lancifolium ‘Floro-Pleno’ . This one was shot later in the day, with much better light. I often don’t like double Lillies, but this one is great!

What a delight finding the beautiful Double Tiger Lily, Lillium lancifolium ‘Floro-Pleno’ blooming away at this morning’s job site. We planted these about 15 years ago and they have been a regular bloomer every summer since. The clumps are between 5-6’ tall!

This little charmer is the Rose ‘Margo Koster’. They have these beautiful salmon cupped flowers that age to a delightful apricot. It is a Polyantha type Rose and as with this group it is a tough, low growing, disease resistant and cluster flowering rose. The Rose was named for the breeder Dick Koster’s wife, Margo. I first saw this little rose in a wonderful clients garden in 1981 and I’ve had one since in her memory and to enjoy. , , , , , , , , , , , .

This beautiful old fashioned rose is Rosa chinensis’Oakland’ and is planted with my favorite Spiderwort, Tradescantia virginiana’Concord Grape. The Oakland Rose looks very similar to the Rose ‘Nearly Wild’, but is a larger plant and is a deeper pink. The Oakland Rose was found by nursery owner Jane Symmes in a cemetery in Atlanta. I first got it from her nursery in 1984 and have had one since. , , ,
