After an accident, most people are trying to figure out two things: how bad is the damage, and what happens next?
A few simple insurance basics can make that process a lot less frustrating.
1. Check your rental coverage. Not every policy automatically pays for a rental while your vehicle is being repaired, and those few extra dollars more than pays for itself if you ever need it.
2. Know your deductible. A lower monthly payment can sometimes mean a higher out-of-pocket cost after a claim.
3. Ask about OEM parts coverage. Some policies allow for original manufacturer parts, while others may push aftermarket or used parts depending on the situation. You're much better off in the long run sticking to OEM parts.
4. Review your coverage limits. State minimum coverage may keep you legal, but it may not fully protect you after a serious accident.
5. Remember that you choose the repair shop. Your insurance company may recommend a shop, but you still have the right to choose where your vehicle is repaired. A little time reviewing your policy now can save a lot of frustration later.
