Sunday is shop organization, and cleaning day. Shout out to my wife for helping me stay organized and keep things on track. Our board is filling up fast for fall work, let me know if you need to get on the books!

Well it didn’t take long but Ironwood has outgrown our shop. It’s a blessing really but we’re again looking for a large shop. Preferably multiple bays, good access for boats and rigs. Any leads would be appreciated! Thank you.

We love our customers and love how diverse we are and can offer people a one stop shop for pretty much everything. I love my job that I’ve created for myself, by myself.

One customer, multiple rigs, and a little bit of everything we do here at Ironwood! 🤝

Their 2016 Duramax came in for a full interior/exterior detail, along with new front seat covers and foam to freshen up the interior.

Next up was their boat, where we performed a full electrical diagnostic and repair, tracked down the issue, and got it back out on the water running right. While we had it, we also noticed the boat cover needed some repairs and a few carpet snaps needed attention. We reached out to our partner Foxy Stitches Upholstery, and they got both taken care of while the boat was already here.

And while their 2026 Duramax was at the shop — which we previously ceramic coated — we gave it a maintenance wash and topped it with Bead Maker to keep that coating maintained and looking sharp.

Three rigs, multiple services, and one stop to get it all handled.

A huge thank you to this customer for continuing to trust Ironwood Marine & Powersports, and a shoutout to Foxy Stitches Upholstery for taking care of the boat cover and carpet snaps for us! 🤝

Full front interior done on this 2016 Duramax. All new covers and foam, swapped over the heated and air conditioning seats and it’s ready for an interior and exterior detail tomorrow with some paint correction as well. Foxy Stitches Upholstery helped me knock out the driver side coming in clutch like always 🙌🏽💯

This one put the diagnostic skills to the test. 🤙🏽

We had a Volvo Penta 4.3 GXi that would start and run great at the shop, sometimes for days, but once it got out on the water and was put under load, it would randomly die and could become a no-start.

Instead of throwing parts at it, we started digging into the electrical side. Diacom was showing multiple sensor voltage-low faults along with a 5V reference low code. Coolant temp, intake temp, MAP, TPS, oil pressure—you name it. At one point the computer thought the engine was 242°, even with the coolant temp sensor unplugged.

That told us we weren’t dealing with a bunch of bad sensors. Something was pulling the entire 5V reference circuit down.

So we started isolating circuits one at a time. Sensors unplugged, wiring checked, live data monitored—the 5V reference stayed down.

Until we unplugged the trim sensor.

Immediately the 5V reference came back and the engine fired right up. We followed the trim wiring and found the problem: damaged/chafed wiring with exposed conductors, creating an intermittent short. That explains why the problem would come and go and why it showed itself under real-world conditions.

We isolated the damaged circuit, cleared the faults and took it back to the water for an actual load test. Ran great under load and the 5V reference fault did not return. We also continued working through a crank-position sensor fault that showed up during testing rather than calling it good at the first sign of success.

This is why diagnostics matter. Sometimes the problem isn’t the sensor the computer is complaining about. One damaged wire can make an entire engine-management system look like it’s failing.

Diagnose. Verify. Repair. Water test. Verify again.

Best part was I handed the boat off to the owner at the dock and they went out for a sunset cruise.

Just another day at Ironwood Marine & Powersports. 🔧🚤

Just some raw footage of me doing my thing. No catchy music, no flashy filters—actually, quite the opposite.

Sometimes when I’m working on these boats from the mid-2000s, I think about the mechanics who started turning wrenches back in the ’80s and ’90s. I can only imagine what it was like for them to watch marine technology evolve throughout their careers and eventually see boats like these roll into the shop brand new.

I’ve worked on boats dating all the way back to the 1950s and others as new as 2024. Different generations, different engines, different technology—and there’s always something to learn.

I truly enjoy wrenching on these machines. I love the marine industry, the history behind it, and the world that surrounds it. There’s something pretty special about keeping a machine alive that has already given a family years of memories.

Because no matter how much the technology changes, one thing never does: the joy boating brings families.

I love being the guy who keeps these machines running and keeps those memories going. That’s what this is all about for me. 🤙🏽

Morning Ironwood fam 🙌🏽💯 you know what time it is… time to put another one to bed. We got it running on a hose getting that fuel stabilizer mixed and thermostat open. Will drain and add antifreeze and put his cover back on and shrink wrap. Guess what are coolant amount for the season will be after this one!?

Just reminiscing on one of my favorite boat projects we did, the first actual upholstery and paying job we had. It’s crazy it’s been over a year now and we’ve grown so much. Thank you all for supporting us and choosing us over and again.

Big shout out to Jason Cantrell for taking a chance on me too!

And Foxy Stitches Upholstery for being the best mentor out there.

Hey guys we’re kicking around the idea of offering shrink wrapping as a service for our customers. I’ve had a couple people ask me and I’m just curious if there is a demand for it. If this is a service you think you would be interested in give this post a like!
