Even a Garage-Kept Vehicle Can Develop Hazy Headlights

This 2016 Toyota RAV4 has spent much of its life protected in a garage, and the vehicle itself shows it. But after about 10 years, the headlights told a different story.
Both lenses had developed a cloudy, oxidized appearance that made the front of an otherwise well-kept RAV4 look considerably older.
Instead of replacing the headlight assemblies, we restored them.
The before-and-after photos show the difference. The cloudy surface is dramatically clearer, the internal reflectors and lighting elements are visible again, and the entire front of the RAV4 looks refreshed.
It's also a good reminder that garage-kept doesn't necessarily mean oxidation-free. Headlights are exposed to sunlight, heat, weather and road conditions every time the vehicle is driven. Over enough years, that exposure can take its toll on the protective surface of a polycarbonate lens.
If the rest of the vehicle still looks great, cloudy headlights don't have to be what gives away its age.

Yellow? Hazy? Haze Away.

I'm grateful to the owner of a 2016 Toyota Rav4 for the practice on the headlights. The hazy headlights were curing after I left it near Pilot Mountain. It was surprising to learn that the garage kept vehicle had such issues.

🚗✨ **FROM THE JUNKYARD TO HAZE AWAY: THE PINK BEETLE HEADLIGHT**

Not every headlight restoration goes exactly according to plan—and that's one reason I've been collecting old, ugly headlights from junkyards.

This right-side headlight came from a **2003 pink Volkswagen New Beetle**. The car had reached the junkyard, but its cloudy, weathered headlight still had another job to do: become a practice piece for **Haze Away Headlights**.

And this one made me work for it.

The first restoration pass made a noticeable improvement, but when I examined the lens afterward, I wasn't satisfied with the result.

So I did it again.

I went back, addressed the remaining problem areas, worked through the restoration process a second time, polished it again, and finally got the improvement I was looking for.

That's exactly why I'm practicing on real headlights from real vehicles.

A perfectly controlled demonstration piece can show you a process. An old junkyard headlight can show you the **problems**.

Different lenses have different levels of oxidation, failed coatings, scratches, pitting and years of exposure. Sometimes the first approach works beautifully. Sometimes a lens tells you that you're not finished yet.

And I'd much rather encounter those lessons on a junkyard workbench than for the first time on somebody else's vehicle.

These old assemblies are also helping me build a library of different makes, models, lens shapes and levels of deterioration. I'm documenting them before restoration, working through the sanding and polishing stages, comparing results, and learning what produces the most consistent improvement.

The goal isn't necessarily to make every old junkyard headlight look factory-new. Some have permanent damage that restoration can't erase.

The goal is to learn how to recognize what **can** be improved—and then improve it substantially.

This old pink Beetle donated a pretty good lesson.

**Pass #1: Better.**

**Pass #2: That's more like it. ✨**

One junkyard headlight at a time, we're working toward the parking lot.

**YELLOW? HAZY? HAZE AWAY.**

A client with a 2018 Kia Sportage responded to my request to practice for free on his vehicle. He only needed one headlight done as it shows residue in the middle. Here are before and after photos. Kia's tend to have a harder baked coating and require a little more effort.

💡 I DIDN’T BELIEVE IT EITHER…

But yes—you really can restore yellow, cloudy and hazy headlights.

I've been learning headlight restoration by working on the headlights of my own 2013 Mazda3, and the results surprised me.

For this headlight, I intentionally stopped halfway across the lens so you can see the difference on the same headlight:

✨ One side has been polished and UV protected.
🌫️ The other side has only been sanded.

And now I need more headlights to practice on.

🚗 I’M LOOKING FOR 10 LOCAL VEHICLES

I'm looking for 10 qualifying vehicles in the King, Rural Hall and Winston-Salem area with yellow, cloudy or hazy headlights.

I'll restore them for FREE.

Why free?

Because I'm still practicing. I want experience working with different makes, models, lens shapes and levels of oxidation before I begin offering headlight restoration as a regular paid service.

I'm not promising perfection. Some headlights have internal deterioration, cracks, moisture or other damage that exterior restoration can't fix.

But I'm going to work to make your headlights look a whole lot better.

💡 Why Do Headlights Turn Yellow?

That cloudy yellow haze on an older headlight isn't just dirt. There's science behind it.

Most modern headlight lenses are made from tough polycarbonate plastic. They're manufactured with a protective coating because years of exposure to ultraviolet sunlight, oxygen, heat, moisture and road abrasion can gradually damage the surface.

☀️ UV exposure contributes to photodegradation.
🧪 Oxidation changes the weathered surface.
🛣️ Road grit and abrasion create microscopic surface damage.
🌡️ Heat and weather cycles add years of environmental stress.

As the protective surface deteriorates, the lens can become yellow, cloudy, dull or hazy. Instead of light passing cleanly through a clear lens, a deteriorated surface can scatter and reduce useful light.

That's where Haze Away Headlights comes in.

For suitable headlights, we remove the damaged exterior material through progressive sanding, restore clarity through polishing, and finish with UV protection to help protect the restored surface.

It's a little chemistry, a little physics—and a whole lot of sanding and polishing.

Same headlight. Two different stages. The hazy side has been sanded, while the clear side has been polished and finished with UV protection. It’s a great demonstration of why sanding is only part of a complete headlight restoration.
