Brief History of The Holy Smoke Camp: Located 1 mile northwest of Keystone in Buckeye Gulch, the area was first inhabited by a Fred Cross as early as the 1870's. The Vulcan Mining Group, of which the Holy Smoke is part, originally occupied 102 acres of gold, silver and copper deposits and was founded by the colorful Col. Clark was so intrigued with the naming of Keystone's notorious "Holy Terror" mine, that he named the property "The Holy Smoke". Ore was located in this area in Pre-Cambrian Schist and Quartzite and two shafts were sunk at the 85 and 106 foot levels. Popular author Stewart Edward White came to the Holy Smoke in the late 1800's dressed like a miner and leading a pack mule. Here he stayed in a log cabin and wrote three best selling novels- "The Westerners," "The High Graders," and "The Claim Jumpers." Working as paymaster in one of the local mines, White was almost hung by mistake over a wage dispute. He left the Holy Smoke and went to Arizona and became a well-known author of Western Semi-Fiction.

As we close out another season here at Holy Smoke Resort, we want to take a moment to say THANK YOU!

To all of our wonderful guests, whether you stayed with us for the first time or have been coming back year after year, we truly appreciate you choosing Holy Smoke Resort as part of your Black Hills adventure.

We've enjoyed meeting new faces, welcoming back familiar ones, sharing stories, and helping make memories along the way. It's the people we meet each season who make what we do so special.

We are incredibly grateful for your continued support, kind words, recommendations, and friendships.

As we settle in for the off-season, we wish everyone a safe, happy, and healthy winter. We look forward to welcoming you back in May 2027!

Our 2026 season is quickly coming to an end, and our last night for cabin rentals at Holy Smoke Resort will be October 11.

🦬 You never know who you might meet in the Black Hills!

One of the best parts about visiting our area is seeing the wildlife. Bison, deer, elk, mountain goats, bighorn sheep, wild turkeys and more all call the Black Hills home.

Sometimes the best vacation memories aren't the things you planned — they're the unexpected moments along the way. ❤️

🌙 Have you ever seen Mount Rushmore after dark?

The Evening Lighting Ceremony is one of those Black Hills experiences that is worth seeing at least once. Watching Mount Rushmore light up against the night sky is a pretty special way to end a day in the Black Hills.

The Evening Lighting Ceremony continues through September 30, so if you’re visiting us this week, add it to your plans!

And a little tip from us — if you’re staying at Holy Smoke Resort, stop by and check into your cabin before heading to the ceremony. It’s much easier to find your way around while it’s still daylight. 😊

Fall is one of our favorite times of year in the Black Hills. Cooler days, changing leaves and beautiful scenic drives make this a wonderful time for one last getaway before winter arrives.

Take a drive on Iron Mountain Road or Needles Highway, spend some time in Keystone, visit Mount Rushmore, and come back to your cabin to relax after a day of exploring.
