BLEEDING THE 6.4 Powerstroke Diesel…

The fuel system on the 6.4 is a volume system therefore it only needs between 3 and 10 PSI to operate.

We spent all day after determining that the fuel system was clean and functioning trying to bleed the bubbles out.

Finally we ran a hose from the shader valve on the cooler back to the tank and used a scanner to command the lift pump to on and after an hour the air finally was purged. It then started.

We tried cycling the key multiple times and filling a five gallon bucket to no result.

A FLEET I AM RESPONSABLE FOR...

In fleet operations up time is the amount of time a revenue vehicle is available for work.

I weekly check this fleet over looking for any defects and when found addressed, regular periodic maintenance is performed.

Most fleet operators have an A service and a B service one being more involved than the other, I do not do that, I have what I call a general check where at each service the vehicle is brought back to factory specs.

The up time on this fleet is around 99%. Only because some time a vehicle takes longer than a day to service. Services are most often done on the weekends to keep this fleet in service.

So one time the person that manages West Orange Public School buses asked me if I do catch up maintenance during the summer. I replied that we don’t do ketchup maintenance we maintain them year round.

2015 GMC 2500 6.6 Duramax Diesel.

Top left is engine coolant temperature ECT shows about 140. On the top right is fuel Temperature sensor. It is erratic bouncing between 255° and 257°. The set code was P008f correlation between Coolant and Fuel Temperature. Should be about 36° see the second video to see the correlation.

Diagnosis: bad fuel Temperature sensor.

Indication: Sensor is fluctuating so wireing is good. Coolant sensor reads normal temperature there is no way fuel Temperature should be 255-257°

SOMETHING ELSE I REMEMBER

Today technicians all over the country install CR seals in vehicles. They have no idea what CR stands for.

When I first arrived full time at the bus company we used real Chicago Rawhide seals. Wheel seals were made of leather not the rubber products used today.

Chicago from the civil war to the early 70's was the cattle processing capital of the world. From Chicago stock yards beef was shipped east and west for consumption in the cities. One of the products was leather. Before reliable rubber materials were available the leather was used in grease seals.

I can remember installing these seals in our buses however it was not long before we switched to rubber seals.

So those boxes that say CR on them stands for Chicago Rawhide. Which would make no sense to you young guys.

FOR JACO...

The other day I ordered a steering stabilizer for a truck from a young kid. He had no idea what it was for.

So I told him this story.

When I was young, maybe 14 I would spend the summer going to work with Dad. Each day was hard work and very dirty. My philosophy has always been that dirt under the nails is a badge of honor rather than a hygiene problem.

Jaco was a happy jovial Black guy that worked at the bus company, I think he was the go for. (I am trying to remember 50 years ago) Jaco took me under his wing and he impressed me so much. Then one day he did not show for work. Jaco was killed the day before.

In those days around 1967 or 8 cars had no steering stabilizers. The car that Jaco was driving went out of control and hit a pole when he drove into a deep puddle at speed. The sudden pressure on his right wheel took the steering wheel out of his hands and the rest is the disaster that followed.

At some point after that steering stabilizers which are shock absorbers that keep the wheels straight under those conditions were added, they save lives.

I found the solution to the Cummings ISB VP44 pump dead pedal problem. Parts are on order and I will show the diagnosis procedure as well as the fix. To be continued...

New Technical Problem Discovered and Fixed.

Vehicle: 2005 Ford F Model.

Engine: 6.0 Turbo Charged Aftercooled Diesel.

Symptoms: when warm the engine will rev to more than 5,000 RPM overspeed code is set then the high oil pressure fails and a crank no start condition results. Low oil pressure goes to zero.

Components Involved: IPR (injection pressure regulator) injection pump tee "O" ring under turbocharger.

During road testing the engine stumbled and shut off requiring towing back to the shop twice.

Both times the "O" ring was blown out.

Scan parameters were the Desired High Oil Pressure was 200 to 500 psi higher than the actual pressure.

It turned out to be a defective IPR which was New and just replaced.

The way we found it was buy checking first the low oil pressure pump and bypass spring then finding that good we installed a 10,000 lbs gauge in place of the ICP (injection control pressure) sensor the physical pressure agreed with the telemetry coming from the electronic sensor, lastly we installed a used IPR and it fixed the problem.

Calibrating a boring bar.

Mount the bar on the engine and center it then adjust the cutter until it just cuts the cylinder a thousands or two. After cutting that cylinder mic it and record the reading. Then adjust the boring bar micrometer to that setting. Next cut another cylinder to verify the correct setting. This takes about 4 hours. Then you are ready to bore the engine.

Engines these days have very close tolerances. They have an alloy that does not expand as much as older pistons and they can maintain these unheard of measurements.
