"Which is a good auto insurance company?" We are asked this every week. There are many good insurance companies and lately more and more bad ones. The bottom line: Ask a potential insurer how they handle claims:
1. Do they insist on YOU taking photos to upload? Some will tell you that this is just for a quick understanding of the extent of the damages. What you need to know is whether or not they will generate an estimate from those photos - Big Red Flag!
2. Do they have staff field Licensed Appraisers in your area - or will they send out an Independent IN-PERSON Licensed Appraiser? Either are absolutely acceptable.
3. Do they offer an OEM Parts Rider - OEM means Original Equipment Manufacturer - if you drive a Honda, only Honda parts will be used in your vehicle repairs. If they DON'T be prepared to take a chance with additional out-of-pocket expenses to get the parts made by your Vehicle Manufacturer. There's been a ridiculous trend lately: Several Insurers are only paying for the Least Expensive parts - After Market (GENERIC) mostly (some LKQ - used parts) from vendors all over the country. For example, in a recent claim an Insurer used an independent company to write an estimate from photos uploaded by the vehicle owner (as requested by the insurer). The independent company writes ACCORDING to the "rules" of the Insurer. The vehicle owner sent us the estimate APPROVED by his Insurer. The vehicle owner and our shop are in CT. The vehicle is a 2024 Honda. The INSURER APPROVED Estimate provided for the use of almost ALL After Market (GENERIC) parts - two from California (including a HOOD Panel) another from TEXAS. Do YOU want those parts? We will NOT purchase, use, or consider them.
Bottom line: Know your insurer - don't just choose for the cheapest premium - and ALWAYS choose to have Rental Coverage, even if you don't think you will need it.
