Used Car Myth: you always come out ahead selling it yourself.

Sometimes you do. Often you don’t, and here’s the part nobody runs the numbers on: in Wisconsin, your trade-in value is exempt from sales tax. So instead of paying tax on the full price of your new car, you only pay tax on what’s left after your trade-in is subtracted.

On a $25k car with an $8,500 trade, you’d only owe sales tax on $16,500. That means the $8,500 trade-in never gets taxed at all; which puts roughly $470 back in your pocket before you’ve done anything (varies slightly by county).

Add three weekends of no-shows, the lowballers, and the fake-cashier’s-check crowd, and that gap closes fast.
