I don’t know if we will ever truly be able to put into words how grateful our family is for the love and support shown for Big Boy today.

Seeing so many of you show up and show out to make his final lap around the store so meaningful, heartfelt, and special is something our family will carry with us forever.

So many of you changed your plans, rerouted your journeys, took time out of your day, brought your trucks, turned on your lights, blew your horns, stood along the way, and simply showed up to honor a man who meant so much to so many.

From the very bottom of our hearts—THANK YOU. Thank you. Thank you. 🤍

Big Boy’s Truckstop has always been more than a business to our family. It has been a lifetime of hard work, relationships, friendships, stories, laughter, and memories. Today was a beautiful reminder that the heart of this place has always been the people.

Our drivers, customers, employees, friends, and this incredible community—you are the reason we have been able to keep doing what we do every day. Without you, there would be no Big Boy’s.

We are so incredibly grateful for the special trucking and hometown communities that wrapped their arms around our family during one of the hardest days of our lives.

Hearing those horns and seeing those trucks lined up as my Grandaddy took his last lap around the place he poured so much of his life into is a moment I will never forget. There was so much love in that parking lot today, and I know he would have been incredibly proud.

You gave our Big Boy a send-off worthy of the man he was.

You showed up.
You showed out.
And most importantly, you showed us just how loved he was.

There will never be enough words to express what that meant to us.

You all mean the absolute world to our family, and we hope you know how much we love and appreciate every single one of you.

Reading your heartfelt condolences for my dad, my shirt is wet from the tears. Wow. My mind goes back to the 90's when he was full of energy and wanted to be in each of your lives probably more than he was even capable of. You were his brothers, and sisters. He genuinely loved this community and wanted every day to contribute a little joy in your lives. He was so grateful for the opportunity to operate the truck stop. God put wonderful people in his path to ensure its success. Mr. Norman Richardson who influenced me in particular was so patient and encouraging to dad. Mr. Norman's kindness and experience in the business world was instrumental those years when dad needed a friend in that very important role. Over the years we've felt the pain of loss in your family too. His brothers and sisters hurt; he hurt and wanted to help. The wonderful folks that's worked with us over the years are an extension of his care and love. I think that's one reason we come up with the home away from home slogan. He loved looking out at the pumps to see you pull up so he could speak to you that day as you were getting started or coming in after a long day. When a need was shared with him, so many times he would walk back to the office and say to Angela, can we help my friend in need. He was human and we all are. Thank God for His long-suffering mercy upon us all. Dad was a social person, and he enjoyed everyone from every rung on the social ladder. I just wish I could convey my mind to you all in greater description the joy you brought to him these past 35 years serving you. His family. May God bless you each one for many good years to come. And from my heart to you I just want to tell you that Jesus really does love you so very much, and wants to give you the best life so we'll be ready to live when it's our time to exit this world.

It is with tender hearts that we announce the passing of our founder and name sake, Walter Lee “Big Boy” Powell. While we certainly mourn his passing, we rejoice in knowing he is at peace.

Big Boy was well known and loved by all who knew him, but most of all by his family. Our world feels a little dimmer without his legendary presence, however our hearts are filled with gratitude for the fond memories we cherish and the privilege of knowing and loving him.

But we know he wasn’t just ours— Big Boy’s love and connection extended to our local customers, the trucking community, and the many friends he’s made throughout his life. He had an irresistible charm and a unique ability to make folks feel special and welcome. God’s favor and blessings were upon him, and it brought him great joy to help others in need. He was very humbled by our community’s continued patronage and support throughout the years, so on behalf of him as well as the rest of the Big Boy’s family— we thank you all from the bottom of hearts and appreciate the outpouring of love, concern, and care we have received. ❤️
