Good morning everyone! Thanks again for following our page, I want to share with you some information about buying a car that I hope you will find helpful in your quest for that perfect vehicle.
1.) Did you know that 40% of all vehicles on the road have been in some type of accident? It is always important to see a carfax report on any vehicle you are looking to buy. This report is very good at telling you what type of accidents the vehicle may have been in. Do not be afraid of a car with minor damage on its report, typically these are just cosmetic dents and dings that hould not effect the vehicles performance.
2.) Speaking of Carfax, many consumers falsely belive that a Carfax report is a "bible" on that vehicle. Carfax only gets information from Public Records and shops that report their service and maintenance files to them. It is very well possible that a vehicle was well maintained by a local shop but they do not have the capabilities to report to Carfax. My point being Carfax is an excellent guide and can give you piece of mind that a car hasnt been salvaged or flooded, but it is not the entire history of the vehicle.
3.) Since I brought up the subject of flooded vehicles, we hope that everyone has recovered by now from the devastating effects of Hurricane Harvey last year. Many of you and our customers have asked and been worried about buying a flood vehicle. It is still the number one question that people ask 6 months later. Here are some things you can look for to see if a car has been in a flood. Understand that if you see one of these things and not the others is does not mean it was a flood car, this is a guideline to give you the best way of determining yourself if you think a car has been flooded or incurred water damage.
#1. Smell - this is the number one deadgive away. If you smell mold or mildew, stay away.
#2. Are the metal brackets that hold the seat down rusted? That could indicate that the car was in water, those brackets in general should be free of rust. A little surface rust is fine, but if the majority of it has rust it is a good indicator of water damage.
#3. Feel the carpet UNDER the seats. Does it feel damp? Does it smell off? This is one of the places people forget to clean if they are trying to pass off a flood or water damaged vehicle.
#4. This is a good one and kind of a little known way to detect a flood vehicle but here it goes. When you open the door before you sit down pull the seat belt all the way until it stops. Even if a person has cleaned out the entire car, pulled the seats cleaned the carpeting, all of it. They always forget the seat belts. If there was water in the car you will see a water stain at the end of the seat belt, or it may even still feel wet!
#5. Do the power seats or window controls sometimes work and sometimes not? If the car was in water the electronics corrode over time causing misfires and eventual failure of the component.
#6. Last but not least, your gut. Trust your gut. If something does not feel right about purchasing a vehicle for ANY reason, walk away. Do not ever forget that you are the one in control, you are the buyer, if you do not feel comfortable, just do not buy it. You will find the car that was meant for you, have patience and I promise it will be worth it.
Thanks again and I hope this helps you make the best car buying decision whether or not it is from us or anyone else!
Have safe and happy 2018!
Robert
