TRUCKER TRIVIA 🧠 β€” What is the minimum legal tire tread depth on your STEER tires?

A DOT inspector walks up with a tread depth gauge at a roadside inspection... what is the magic number that keeps you rolling? (Hint: it is NOT the same as your drives and trailer tires.)

Drop your answer in the comments πŸ‘‡. Answer revealed in tomorrow's post.

Pulling re**er, so here is one that saves loads: always check the set temp against the BOL before they load you, not after. Then run your own re**er pre-check β€” fuel level, belts, and any fault codes on the unit β€” because a dead re**er on a live load is a claim waiting to happen. Do not let the warehouse rush you past it.

FMCSA just moved its split sleeper berth pilot one step closer to reality. The plan: let 256 volunteer drivers split their 10 off-duty hours however they want for 16 weeks β€” possibly opening up 5/5 or 6/4 splits instead of only the 7/3 and 8/2 we have now. If the study shows it's safe, it could mean real rest flexibility for all of us down the road. Public comments are open until Dec 7, so this is our chance to weigh in.

TRUCKER POLL πŸ—³οΈ β€” If you could change ONE thing about the ELD, what would it be?

Vote in the comments:
😴 = Pause the 14-hour clock for real rest breaks
πŸ“‘ = Malfunction forgiveness β€” don't eat my hours when the device glitches
πŸ…ΏοΈ = Real personal conveyance β€” let me actually get to safe parking
⏱️ = Detention reform β€” shippers burn MY clock, they should pay

Drivers, this one's yours. What's your pick? πŸ‘‡

FMCSA just shut down nearly 10,000 CDL training schools and driving centers across the country. The agency says a two-year enforcement campaign found providers that were not meeting federal entry-level training standards β€” so-called license mills that cut corners instead of properly training new drivers. About 31,000 providers remain active, and nearly 800 more are still under review. If you know someone starting CDL school, make sure the provider is on FMCSA's Training Provider Registry and doing things right.

Drivers, stop tossing those fuel receipts β€” I keep every one of mine. Come IFTA filing time or tax season, these little slips are what back up your numbers, and an auditor will not just take your word for it.

Snap a photo the second you fuel up, then keep them all in one folder. Future you will be grateful.

Starting Monday, October 12, the paper medical card backup is done for most CDL holders. FMCSA is ending the federal exemption that let drivers use a paper Medical Examiner Certificate as a temporary proof of medical status - after that, your qualification will come only from the electronic record your examiner sends through to your state. If you have a DOT physical around that date, make sure your examiner submits the results promptly and confirm your state has you marked qualified. Alaska drivers are the only exception.

Sitting at a dock like this, you have a few minutes - use them. Walk the trailer tires: look for uneven wear, check inflation with a gauge not your boot, and make sure your tandems are pinned where you logged them. A tire problem found in the yard is free; a tire problem found on the interstate is not.

Bobtail like this is when I really get to know my truck. No trailer, no rush β€” take that moment and thump every drive tire, check for uneven wear or flat spots, and give those lug nuts a good look. Five minutes in the lot beats a blowout on the highway, trust me.

Drive safe out there, drivers.
