Today was an exercise in the - Nor Rain - part of the US Post Office slogan....

The first load was ran down and unloaded in a nice cold rain shower, then came home and loaded up trailer load #2 also in the rain.

Thankfully unloading on the 2nd load, Mother Nature decided to stop raining on us long enough to get unloaded and back in the truck headed home before she started up again.

Just shy of 4K lbs of metal being put back to useful purposes today, instead of being dumped in a landfill.

Back out for 4 more pickups this afternoon

Scrapping is hard work that a very select few are cut out for.

We operate in all sorts of weather just like the old postal slogan states -

Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor the gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds.

Not only do we work in all sorts of weather conditions, but it is also a very physically demanding line of work as well as a something where you're going to get very dirty while you're out there taking care of business.

Most days, when I finally finish for the day, my clothes are as filthy as they are in the photo below, and I usually feel like I'm carrying around an extra 10lbs with me between the sweat and the grime I'm covered in.

Why do I keep scrapping you might ask well I do so because...

I'm helping my family, friends, neighbors, and my community to responsibly recycle back into the various material streams metal items that if just dumped take up tremendous amounts of space in our landfills and are permanently removed for all cost effective purposes from being reused and recycled.

I'm an environmentalist at
heart, I don't hate, look down on or want to denigrate our metal ore mining industries, metal refiners and manufacturers as we are entirely too dependent on items made from the ores they take from the ground and refine to make into the metal bearing products and items we use every day of our lives. I do however wish to do my part every day to reduce the amount of mining that must take place by recycling and reusing metals responsibly as ore mining operations are absolutely environmentally destructive operations even when the best practices and recovery methods available are put to use.

For every ton of steel recycled, 2,500 pounds of iron ore, 1,400 pounds of coal, and 120 pounds of limestone are conserved.

And finally, because I'm a tinker at heart who loves working with my hands. I love taking things apart and putting them back together again. Believe it or not I do actually try to repair items if it can be done without a huge chunk of time spent to repair and is cost effective to do so. Though more often than not, I only end up taking things apart as is evidenced by the fact I'm down at the yard 3 to 4 times a week dropping loads off.

Mike Rowes, a TV personality from the show Dirty Jobs has a quote I love and that I think sums up the hard work we scrappers do everyday (as well as all the other hardworking physically demanding professions out there that help keep this world running!)

“I can say the willingness to get dirty has always defined us as a nation, and it's a hallmark of hard work and a hallmark of fun, and dirt is not the enemy."

Things that make you go hmmmm..... Definitely was not expecting to see this today when I was breaking down this dryer.

Please for your family's safety take the time at least once or twice a year to vacuum out inside your dryer base (it's literally 6 to 10 screws that you unscrew and then screw back on) and vacuum out your lint trap on the dryer, as well as your ducting from the dryer to the outside of your house.

I see so many dryers that how they have never caught on fire, not to mention how the dryer even dried things I don't know how to explain.

Kansas City's Happy Scapper finally has his page back 🥳🥳🥳!

Finally got my page back to being a published page after being unpublished by the corporate overseers at Meta.

What I was unpublished for I don't know as there was nothing flagged as offensive content, false information or anything else.

Long day for me yesterday, hit the road at 8AM with 2000 lbs of #2 prepared steel that was hand loaded up Tuesday evening & then thankfully magnet truck unloaded late yesterday morning. Then it was off for an early lunch at Portia's Cafe with my beautiful wife (My burger and fries hit the spot for me and the strawberry cake finished my meal off nicely 😋.)

After lunch took a short break to be my daughter's chauffer to and from getting her eyes dilated and then it was off to the races for the rest of the afternoon and evening picking up multiple items. 2 fridges (one that had to come down 3 flights of stairs) 1 stove, 3 washers, 2 dryers, 3 grills, 1 microwave, a ceiling fan and a partridge in a pear tree (not really on the partridge in a pear tree but you know it made you laugh 😄!)

It's was a long hot day but scrap metal don't load and unload itself so as Larry the Cable Guy famously says !

Today we gather at cemeteries, monuments, and parks all over the country, march in parades in cities big and small from Hawaii to Virginia, North Dakota to Texas and we watch the annual Memorial Day concert on television. We do these things to honor the loyalty and bravery of our fallen in this noble calling - military service.

So many mothers and wives, husbands and fathers, extended family and friends do their duty every day to ensure their loved one is remembered. They carry on each day with pictures on mantels and mementos of a life not fully lived. They carry on understanding that their Soldier chose this life of service and thus they understood the potentiality of their death as a sacrifice for the sake of freedom. These men and women left behind, carry on their Soldier's message; raising-up their memory like an unfurled flag. Today we also honor the families of those lost, for you bear a burden that only you can comprehend. We are grateful for the support you gave your Soldier, so they could carry out the mission of protecting the rest of us.

It is our responsibility as citizens to remember the Nation's brave fallen men and women - whether they died on foreign lands in the heat of battle or after a lifetime in the uniform of our Army. Never forget the men and women who know all too much the cost of our freedom, for their service to this country is the greatest gift of all.

- Excerpted from Chief of Staff U.S. Strategic Command Major General William Grimsley's 2013 Memorial Day Speech
