50_Shades: SPL Brake Build and rear knuckle refresh

Part 2 - January 2022

Peanut butter.. all crunch. This is largely just a post walking through the state of my hydraulics and lines before going through and replacing them all. Basically everything was 30yrs old and dead tired.

50_Shades: SPL Brake Build & Rear knuckle refresh

Pt. 1 - December 2021

I had this setup in my mind for what feels like literal years. Many of the marginal BBK kits for the S-Chassis still utilize Z33 Track rotors, (CTS-V, EVO, etc.) but then accumulate extra costs with adapters and wonky thread tapping. I was always more interested in how can you simply run the Z33 Brembos.

As you may be aware the Z33 caliper bolt is M14 and S13 is M12. Folks typically doing this swap drill out the knuckle to take a M14 bolts. With a little
Research I was able to find a ~$2 TimeSert that enables this to be a bolt-on afair and utilize an M12 bolt.

The next couple sessions will cover this brake refresh and accompanying rear knuckle rebuild + Z32 caliper/drum setup.

Weekend update:

Was able to clean up the garage some since Steve’s car went home. Feeling weird with the extra space! Need to be smart and not buy another car 🫠

Thanks to Steve - finally got some Type X marker lights for the fenders. Had to take in the freshness of the new lenses!

Also good day for a drive to meet the bros for some food.

Bittersweet day

01/17/2023

We've all been pretty busy lately and I forgot to post that the grey car is officially running, as off 12/31/2022. I cannot thank Derek and Liz enough for all of the support as well as my sister, Tyler, zeke, David, James and I'm sure I'm forgetting someone.

Before the month evaporates, I wanted to make a post showing the current state of the car. I have a few more chronological tech chapters to share still but wanted to cover something current.

The car’s new name is “50 Shades of Red”. Over the fall and into winter I paint matched the aero bits while I had time between work and kiddos. It all looks horrible up close but is somewhat red so for now I will take it. Eventually I’ll get the car all resprayed in AH3. Thanks to Steve and Busch Latte for helping get it all mounted!

This combo has been in my head since first getting the car. Nothing crazy but simple:
-J.Blood knockoff lip (real is discontinued)
-DorkiDori AutoCouture V2 sideskirts & Type X coupe valances.
-Z33 OEM mirrors

Also put on various cleaner panels thanks to Zeke Arant.
-Headlight assemblies
-Trunk
-Taillights
-Taillight trim panel
-Chuki bumper extensions
-Chuki bumper
-Rear bumper

It needs a wang or something now. I have the OEM SE wing, thinking of deleting the 3rd brake light until I find a S14 K’s wing or something similar. I’ll get new coilovers soon and go a little lower, current Megan’s can’t go any lower in the rear.

Red Car Chronological Post #10
Aug 2020 ~ Oct 2021

For about the next year I went on to just enjoy the car. Made an effort to drive it to work as much as possible and do simple life things like groceries and what not. The feeling and emotional connection to these cars was wholesome to experience when I needed it. So many years in my teens and 20’s were spent in them, their smell is forever a core memory.

Anyways just some pics from that year before sharing the next tech chapters it went through...

~August 2020~

In my typical fashion I wasted no time in throwing the car BACK on jack stands 🙃. I found a nearby set of S14 FLCAs for a good deal and decided to rebuild & install them. Good and easy upgrade.

Red Car Chronological Post 8
~July 2020~

After refreshing a ton of stuff I was finally getting close to driving it! What’s not pictured here is me tediously doing an alignment on the car and setting all the coilovers. Had to set it decently high to clear the horrible hump at the entrance of the driveway.

For alignment I used a medium cost toe plate set found on Amazon. I had toe plate setups in the past but had to start fresh. Have used these for years now and they’ve been great!

After finishing the doors it was finally time to do some easier work with buttoning up the front and rear suspension.
