We had a few hours to get out on a local lake this past weekend. 17.5lbs for a summer in Kalamazoo with a 5.15lb largemouth definitely didn’t suck. We caught them a variety of ways from pinging a minnow, drop shotting, a fluke, and a couple on a frog. Although summer time fishing can be tough, when you’re able to find them, it’s very rewarding. Garret and I had an awesome trip to the 1000 islands area. Day one we decided we wanted to try something new and fish Lake Ontario instead of the river and it definitely paid off, we ended up catching almost 25lbs. Although we never hooked a giant, we had an awesome few days catching a ton of fish, and make some life long memories. Mapping was very important this trip for a couple reason. One to safely navigate the St. Lawrence River which has a number of underwater shoals, and two to help us identify key spawning areas to target those big smallmouth. The depth shading and detail of the Humminbird Lakemaster VX Premium chip is an excellent tool in quickly identifying those areas to avoid and to target.

One of my favorite events of the year when I was still on the WMU Bass team was the annual kids camp. We were lucky enough to help out this year, and got to fish with Mason and Torsten. The day started off a little slow with only a few fish, but we made some adjustments later in the day and ended up catching 17.71lbs to win the kids camp. Torsten even caught his pb of 2.89! If you have any friends or family that is interested in learning to bass fish, tournament fishing, or just want to go out with an experienced angler and have some fun, I highly recommend getting them into the kids camp. Rumor has it, there will be another this fall so keep an eye out and give Western Michigan University Bass Fishing Team a follow for updates!

We’ve had a tough couple weeks due to the conditions, but we’ve still made the most of it. Broke both of my PB bass as well with a 6.21lb smallmouth caught on an OSP Blitz EX DR and 6.92lb largemouth on a 3/4oz Carolina Rig paired with a Yamamoto K*t Tail Worm rigged on a BKK hook. Per usual, electronics were key, the Humminbird side imaging was used to find isolated rock piles to target on Lake St. Clair. For Lake Fork, we heavily relied on the new Lakemaster VX Premium chip with depth shading to find key secondary points and flats, and the Minn Kota Raptors to keep us put around all the timber. Here’s a new bait I just picked up from BIGGS Custom Baits LLC that I’m super excited about! Weighing in at 1oz and 5” long, their Minnow in a custom painted crappie color not only looks killer, but is a great size if you want to get into glide bait fishing. Here I have it paired up on a Megabass Levante Brailist (7’5” MH) with 16lb Sunline Sniper on a Bates Hundo reel. From my first impressions, this thing has an awesome action, and paint job. Another big plus to the guys over at Bigg’s Custom Baits is their customer service is top notch. I was able to message them with some questions, and they were very polite and prompt getting back to me. This will be the first of many for myself. Garret and I were able to put a few good ones in the boat on Lake St. Clair this weekend despite some very tough lake conditions. With the water clarity resembling that of your favorite chocolate milk, the Humminbird Mega side imaging was key to finding good rock piles and boulders. We started off the day looking for smallmouth on the main lake doing most all of our damage on a Great Lakes Finesse 1/4 oz Ned rig with a Z-Man TRD Gobyz in Hot Snakes. Later in the day we switched gears and flipped a jig for some largemouth. In total, we had a mixed bag for 20.39lbs and 21 fish total. Garret had a 5.29lb smallmouth to anchor the bag for us. Tough days on the water are made much easier by having your electronics dialed in to be able to find that specific cover the bass are hiding on. Big thank you to Mr. Bill Babrick as our first client of the year. Bill braved a chilly March day to get his new Livescope LVS34 dialed in. To start the day we could only see our bait at about 50 feet. By the end of the session we were able to dial in and track a 1/4oz ball head and 3” Swimbait at 100 feet easy! 🚨 Tackle Tip Tuesday 🚨

Many of our lakes now are reaching that perfect temperature for the bass to spawn. One of my favorite techniques when fishing for bass in taller grass or pads is a swimjig. A lot of times these fish will be hidden under the cover, and hard to get to with traditional baits. Using a Swimjig with a good w**d guard we can get through a lot of that thick cover and pick up some of those hard to catch fish.

Yesterday we had Steve Coleman stop by to get his Lowrance units dialed in. We started off by getting the sonar squared away, then we learned about how to use our sonar in more scenarios. 🚨 Tackle Tip Tuesday 🚨

A lot of times when we think of fishing brush piles, we think to fish a jig or Texas rig. Another great option that’s more subtle is a shakey head when those fish are being stingy. This past week, we put that to the test down at Table Rock Lake. The jig would get follows down to the bottom, but wouldn’t get bit, once we made the switch to the shakey head, everything changed.
