What does Kona look like while a tropical system passes the Big Island?

Kona has these protected little coves along the coastline where water collects and families normally swim and play. Even with the gray skies, there’s something pretty incredible about watching the ocean and weather move through Hawaii Island.

Conditions can change quickly, so always follow local weather, ocean warnings and closures.

So Magics Beach Grill has a live we**am pointed at the beach.
For those of you that don't know Magic's Beach is a great bodyboarding spot but also gets occasional big waves.

The Big Island is open. So how do we support tourism while respecting the communities that need space?

I’ve spent a lot of time this week talking with civic leaders, community members and other small business owners and operators around the Big Island, and I keep coming back to the same thing.

I think there’s fear on both sides of this conversation.

Residents in the hardest-hit areas understandably don’t want their neighborhoods and losses turned into a tourist attraction. People here want their communities treated with respect and given the space they need to recover.

At the same time, I’m hearing from visitors who genuinely care about this island and are now afraid that coming at all would somehow be disrespectful.

And that’s where I think we’re getting stuck.

The Big Island is open.

There is still an incredible amount of this island welcoming visitors. We have an active volcano, beautiful beaches, local restaurants, tours, shops and experiences that people travel thousands of miles to see.

Behind so many of those experiences are small local businesses, employees and families who depend on tourism to make a living. When people become afraid to come to the entire island, that economic impact can happen incredibly fast.

Nobody I’ve talked with wants to minimize what happened. But we also don’t want fear to create another hardship for people and businesses in communities that are open and ready for visitors.

I think most of us actually want the same thing.

We want recovering communities respected. We want visitors to feel welcome. And we want local businesses and the people they employ to make it through this.

So maybe this is the conversation we should all be having together: locals, visitors and business owners. How do we support the Big Island’s recovery, welcome the visitors our economy depends on, and make sure we’re doing both with genuine aloha?

⚠️ HURRICANE LALA — SAFETY NOTICE FOR OUR OHANA ⚠️

A hurricane warning is in effect for Hawaiʻi County. Lala is expected near the island Saturday with heavy rain, flooding and landslides. The Hilo and east side will be hit hardest.

If you are staying on the Hilo side and can get to the Kona side, please go while roads are still clear. If you can’t, stay where you are and shelter in place. Do not try to drive through the storm.

Your safety comes first — first, last and always!!

For driving safety:
• Keep the top up and secured
• Park away from trees, power lines and low ground
• Never drive through standing water
• No Saddle Road, no Mauna Kea Summit, no unpaved or coastal roads until this passes
