Winter can be rough on boats in Southeast Alaska’s damp, cold climate. Go through all major systems before anything else:

1. Start with a Full Systems Check ⚓️
Electrical (batteries, wiring, corrosion)
Fuel system (lines, filters, water separation)
Cooling system (look for cracked hoses or freeze damage)
Catching issues early saves you from getting stranded when the bite is on.

🔋 2. Batteries: Charge, Test, or Replace
Cold temps drain batteries fast over winter.
Fully charge and load test each battery
Clean terminals and check for corrosion
Replace anything questionable—spring failures are common
If it hesitated at all last fall, don’t trust it now.

⛽ 3. Fuel Quality Matters More Than You Think
Condensation is a big issue in Southeast Alaska.
Check for water in your fuel tank
Replace fuel filters and water separators
Consider topping off with fresh fuel and additive
Bad fuel is one of the top reasons boats don’t make it back to the dock.

🛥️ 4. Inspect Hull, Through-Hulls & Running Gear
Before launch, give your boat a thorough visual:
Look for hull damage, blisters, or soft spots
Check through-hull fittings and seacocks for leaks or corrosion
Inspect prop, shaft, and zincs
Saltwater + time = hidden problems.

🧰 5. Don’t Skip Safety Gear & Required Equipment
Spring is a great time to reset your safety baseline:
Check expiration dates on flares and fire extinguishers
Inspect life jackets and replace damaged ones
Test bilge pumps and alarms
You don’t want your first trip to double as an emergency drill.

🌬️ BONUS TIP: Kick the Musty Smell & Light Mold
That closed-up winter moisture smell is almost guaranteed up here.
Open everything up and air it out on a dry day
Wipe down surfaces with a simple vinegar/water mix or marine mildew cleaner
Remove and dry cushions if possible
Use moisture absorbers or a small dehumidifier for a few days
A clean, dry cabin makes those early spring fishing trips a whole lot better—and helps prevent mold from coming back

🚤 Get Your Boat Ready for the 2026 Boating Season! 🌊
The days are getting longer and boating season is right around the corner. Now is the perfect time to start preparing your vessel so you can hit the water safely and without surprises.
Before launch, take some time to check the basics:
✔️ Safety Equipment – Make sure your life jackets are in good condition and you have the correct number on board. Check flares, fire extinguishers, first aid kits, and navigation lights. Replace anything expired or damaged.
✔️ Maintenance – Inspect your engine, batteries, fuel system, and bilge pumps. Check hoses, belts, and fluid levels. A little preventative maintenance now can save a lot of trouble later.
✔️ Hull & Systems – Look over your hull, steering, electrical systems, and thru-hulls for any signs of wear or damage from winter storage.
If you're buying, selling, insuring, or just want peace of mind before the season begins, a professional marine survey is a smart step.
⚓ Tagish Marine is here to help. Contact us for professional marine surveys and inspections to make sure your vessel is ready for a safe and successful 2026 boating season.

We had some heavy snowfall in the last 48 hours. With warming temperatures, the extra weight will cause boats to become unstable.
Let’s all prevent boats from sinking at the docs and get those boats cleared off.

🔥 Winter Storage Fire Safety Reminder 🔥
As boats are laid up for the winter, we want to remind everyone to use extra caution with heat lamps and space heaters in storage areas.
While these devices are often used to protect engines and systems from freezing, they are a leading cause of fires when not installed or monitored properly.
Please keep these safety tips in mind:

• Keep heaters and heat lamps well clear of combustible materials
• Ensure heaters are placed on a stable, non-combustible surface
• Avoid extension cords; plug heaters directly into a rated outlet
• Never use household heat lamps or improvised setups
• Check heaters regularly for damage, dust buildup, or overheating
• Consider alternatives such as engine compartment heaters with thermostatic control
A small amount of prevention now can help avoid significant damage later. If you have questions about safe winter storage practices, our team at Tagish Marine is always happy to help.
Stay safe this winter. ⚓️❄️

🚨 Winter–Spring Boat Safety PSA 🚨
As temperatures begin to warm, it’s critical to keep a close eye on your vessel.

Freezing conditions can damage pumps and thru-hull fittings, especially when ice forms in discharge lines. These failures often don’t leak immediately—but once temperatures rise and ice melts, damage can reveal itself quickly.

⚠️ Common problem areas include:

Washdown pumps

Sinks and heads

Bilge pump discharge lines at or below the waterline

With snow load sitting at the waterline, discharge hoses can easily freeze, crack, or break—leading to flooding once thawing begins.

✅ What you should do:

Inspect thru-hulls and discharge lines regularly

Check pumps for proper operation

Look for signs of cracking, leaks, or loose fittings

Don’t assume everything is fine just because it’s still frozen

A few minutes of inspection now can prevent a major problem later.

If you have questions or need assistance, Tagish Marine is here to help.

Stay safe and keep an eye on your boat as winter transitions to spring. ⚓️
