Dear Avalon Residents,
We are asking for your help in protecting our neighborhood.
A public hearing will be held August 3, 2026, at 6:00 pm and August 18, 2026 at 6:00 pm regarding the proposed construction of a 224-foot wireless telecommunications tower at 6195 Lees Mill Road in Forest Park. This tower would be located much closer to neighboring properties than the County's ordinance intends and raises important concerns about safety,neighborhood compatibility, and quality of life.
The Planning & Zoning staff identified several concerns with the proposal, including:
• Insufficient setback: The proposed tower does not meet the ordinance requirement that a tower be set back from property lines by a distance equal to its height. Instead, it would be only 76 feet 4 inches from the north property line, reducing the intended fall-radius safety buffer.
• Potential safety concerns: The reduced setback raises concerns about structural failure, falling debris, and impacts to adjacent properties.
• Compatibility with nearby homes: While the site is zoned Heavy Industrial, the tower
would be directly adjacent to residential neighborhoods. A 224-foot tower is not
consistent with the character of our community.
• Visual impact: No effort has been made to reduce the tower's height to lessen its visual
impact or improve compliance with setback requirements.
• Impact on nearby residents: The tower would stand approximately 362 feet from
residential property, creating visual intrusion and potential noise and maintenance
activity near homes.
• Questionable public benefit: The proposal is part of AT&T's effort to relocate an
existing tower from a higher-cost location. According to the coverage analysis, moving
the tower would actually reduce wireless coverage to the east of the existing site.
• Does not meet the intent of the County's telecommunications ordinance: The
ordinance is designed to protect public health, safety, and welfare while minimizing
impacts on surrounding properties. Planning staff found that this proposal falls short of
those goals.
• Safety of Our Community and Children: Avalon is home to many families with young
children who live, play, walk, and ride bicycles throughout our neighborhood every day.
As residents, we have a responsibility to advocate for decisions that prioritize their safety.
We strongly encourage you to please attend the hearing and respectfully voice your opposition to this proposal.
