Thought I show an oldie but goodie. Brake fluid should be changed every 2 years or every 30k miles. Brake fluid naturally absorbs moisture and can’t take the heat. Out with the old in with the new. Customer opted to go with a new oil pan. Backstory on this 2012 Chevy Tahoe shop over torqued the drain plug and would leak with a temporary plug. Some what of a big job also had leaking power steering hoses and broken sway bar links. Added note under hood to hopefully to not happen again in the future. Hey Fix-it Felix here bringing you another automotive case study. Had a 2016 Dodge Durango that couldn’t get out of its own way. But this one was a tough call to make and only really could make that call confidently thru the use of an oscilloscope waveform capture. I’ll have to start recording these. I know the way I lay out the test results may make the diagnostic look easy. But it took much longer and I may have left some other scan data I checked but didn’t capture. Vehicle Information

Year/Make/Model: 2016 Dodge Durango SXT
Engine: 3.6L V6

Complaint/Concern

Customer states the vehicle has no power when pushing the accelerator pedal.

Initial Testing

1. Scan Tool Observations:
• DTCs retrieved:
• P0171 (System Too Lean Bank 1)
• P0300 (Random/Multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected)
• Short-term and long-term fuel trims (Bank 1) observed at:
• Idle: +15%
• At 3000 RPM: Worsens to +30%
• O2 sensor readings indicate a lean condition at wide-open throttle (WOT), dropping to approximately 200 mV.
2. Fuel Pressure Check:
• Fuel Rail Pressure: 58 PSI (remains stable at idle and under load).
• However, pressure does not increase by 5–10 PSI under load, which is typical for a healthy system.
3. Oscilloscope Analysis of Fuel Pump:
• Captured waveforms revealed a missing commutator hump on the fuel pump signal, indicative of a shorted commutator internally.

Diagnostic Conclusion

The oscilloscope waveform analysis indicates a failing fuel pump with an internal commutator issue. This failure causes insufficient fuel delivery under load, leading to a lean condition and loss of power.

Repair Procedure

1. Replace Fuel Pump Assembly:
• Removed and replaced the faulty in-tank fuel pump.
• Inspected and cleaned related fuel system components.
2. Post-Repair Waveform Test:
• Recaptured oscilloscope waveforms for the new fuel pump.
• Verified proper waveform with consistent commutator humps.
3. Road Test:
• Conducted a test drive under load.
• Confirmed:
• Fuel trims improved to ±5%, within specification.
• O2 sensor readings now indicate proper stoichiometric combustion at WOT.
• Vehicle power restored.

Outcome

The vehicle now operates as expected under load, with fuel trims and O2 sensor readings within specification. The issue is confirmed fixed.

Technician Notes

• DTCs Cleared: P0171 and P0300 cleared after repairs.
• Recommendation: Advise customer to maintain regular fuel system maintenance and ensure proper fuel quality.
