GM pauses sales of 2024 midsize pickups to fix software

About 15,000 2024 GMC Canyon, Chevrolet Colorado pickups are affected. The vehicles have started to ship to dealerships.

General Motors is delaying the first sales of its 2024 midsize pickups to ensure that the software on the vehicles functions properly.

Why Aren’t There Solar-Powered Cars?

Solar cars exist. The best place to see them is the World Solar Challenge, a race that’s held every two years in Australia. Competitors have to drive about 1,870 miles (3,000 kilometers), from Darwin on the country’s north coast to Adelaide on its south coast, using only energy from the Sun.

Many cars that compete in this race look more like amusement park rides or science fiction vehicles than the cars you see on the road. That tells you something about why solar cars aren’t an option for everyday travel, at least not yet.

Scientists and entrepreneurs at AI frontier point out that AI foundation models will rebuild all walks of life, especially tech-related fields. As a technological product, how will intelligent vehicles be changed by AI foundation models?

In 2023, Changan Automobile added AI edge and AI service layer to the original software-driven architecture (SDA) that includes L1-L6 layers. It can be seen that AI technology has affected most layers of intelligent vehicles: L3 EEA layer, L4 vehicle OS layer, L6 vehicle function application layer (including cockpit, connectivity and intelligent driving), L7 cloud big data layer, etc. The chassis part of L1 mechanical layer and the battery part of L2 power layer have actually involved AI application.

Traffic deaths declined in 2023, but distracted driving remains a danger

The proliferation of infotainment screens in new vehicles adds potential distraction, safety experts say.

Traffic deaths declined in the U.S. in 2023 by 3.6% compared with the prior year, according to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates released April 1. With 40,990 traffic deaths, last year was the third in a row that fatalities exceeded 40,000.

NHTSA also released new data on distracted driving and launched a campaign to raise awareness of the dangers of driving while distracted. Distraction-involved fatalities rose 8% from 2017 to 2021 but came down slightly in 2022 to 3,308 people, according to NHTSA data. An estimated 289,310 people were injured in distracted-driving accidents in 2022, the agency reported. Data for 2023 is not yet available.

Mercedes-Benz pilots high-speed X-ray technology for crash tests

Researchers used the technology to analyze how vehicle body structures deform in a crash to better protect test dummies.

Dive Brief: Mercedes-Benz has become the first automaker to use high-speed X-ray technology to evaluate how its vehicles perform in a crash test, according to a March press release. The technology allows the automaker to capture up to 1,000 high-resolution images per second to analyze how vehicle body structures deform in a crash and protect test dummies more precisely. The automaker plans to use the technology to improve vehicle safety now that it’s established proof of concept.

Porsche and Applied Intuition to jointly develop vehicle software

The partnership also aims to help the automaker better manage and provide vehicle updates. Porsche AG and Applied Intuition, a Silicon Valley-based startup, have partnered to jointly develop automotive software, the companies announced on March 27.

Under the deal, Applied Intuition will give Porsche tools for end-to-end software validation and help the automaker manage and update its vehicle software. Porsche also invested an undisclosed amount in the startup’s recent $250 million funding round, which Applied Intuition will use to develop generative AI and recruit engineers, according to a press release.
