Winter doesn’t care if you drive AWD.

In Jersey, we see it every year — drivers assume all-wheel drive means all-weather control. But here’s what most people don’t realize:

AWD helps you accelerate.
It does not help you stop faster.
Stopping distance in snow and ice depends on:
✔️ Tire tread depth
✔️ Proper tire pressure
✔️ Brake condition
✔️ Safe following distance

Even the best AWD system can’t overcome worn tires or aggressive driving on icy roads.
In fact, studies consistently show that overconfidence in AWD vehicles leads to more winter accidents — because drivers feel safer than they actually are.

Coolant (antifreeze) is what:
• Prevents engine fluids from freezing

• Allows your heater to blow warm air into the cabin

Jersey winters don’t just affect how your car runs — they affect how well you can see.

And visibility is everything.

Most drivers don’t realize this:

Cold weather can harden wiper blades, causing streaking and missed spots right when you need them most. Washer fluid that isn’t winter-rated can freeze in the lines. And weak defrosters can leave fog or frost lingering longer than it should.

Reduced visibility increases reaction time — especially during snow, salt spray, or early morning frost.

During winter, we recommend:
✔ Replacing worn or streaking wiper blades
✔ Using washer fluid rated for freezing temperatures
✔ Making sure your front and rear defrosters are working properly

Cold weather doesn’t just affect your battery and tires — it impacts your brakes too.

In winter, road salt and moisture can cause surface rust overnight. Some light rust is normal… but vibration, grinding, or a soft brake pedal is not.

Here’s what to watch for:
✔ Shaking or vibration when braking
✔ Squealing or grinding noises
✔A brake pedal that feels soft or slow to respond

Winter roads already reduce traction. Your braking system shouldn’t.

If something feels off, don’t ignore it. Small issues are much easier (and cheaper) to fix early.
