As of today, 11 first responders have been killed in 2024 and one of them was in Georgia.
Jefferson Fire Department would like to remind everyone about the importance of the Move Over Law. This law requires drivers to move over or slow down when approaching stationary emergency vehicles, tow trucks, and other service vehicles with flashing lights. By doing so, we can help protect the safety of our emergency responders and keep our roads safer for everyone.
Remember these key points about the Move Over Law:
Move Over: If there is more than one lane traveling in the same direction, drivers must move over to provide a safe distance between their vehicle and the stationary emergency or service vehicle. This helps protect the responders as they work on the side of the road.
Slow Down: If it is not safe or possible to move over, drivers must slow down significantly while passing the stationary emergency or service vehicle. This simple action can prevent accidents and ensure the safety of those on the scene.
Be Alert: Always stay alert while driving and keep an eye out for emergency and service vehicles. Be prepared to move over or slow down as necessary, especially when you see flashing lights or signs indicating emergency or service vehicles ahead.
Consequences: Violating the Move Over Law can result in fines, penalty points on your license, and potentially endangering the lives of emergency responders.
Let's all work together to ensure the safety of our emergency responders by obeying the Move Over Law. Help us make our roads safer for everyone. Thank you for your cooperation and keeping our community safe.
Thank you, Sgt. Deese
