💙🩶Flood Vehicle Inspection Checklist💙🩶
For Residents Affected by the Lewis & Upshur County Floods
The majority of this list can be checked in your own driveway!!
If your vehicle was exposed to flood water, it's important to inspect it thoroughly before returning it to regular use. Hidden damage can lead to costly repairs if left unnoticed.
✔ Document Everything
- Take plenty of photos of your vehicle, inside and out.
- Document the water level and any visible damage before cleaning.
- Keep records for insurance claims and future repairs.
✔ Check All Fluids
Inspect all driveline fluids for signs of water contamination:
- Engine oil
- Transmission fluid
- Front differential
- Rear differential
- Transfer case
Milky or cloudy fluid may indicate water intrusion and should be serviced immediately.
✔ Inspect the Air Intake
- Remove and inspect the engine air filter.
- Check the air box for standing water, mud, or debris.
- Replace the air filter if it became wet.
✔ Dry the Interior Completely
- Carpets and padding often trap moisture.
- Remove carpeting and padding if necessary to allow everything to dry completely.
- This helps prevent mold, mildew, odors, and corrosion.
✔ Inspect the Electrical System
Flood water can damage:
- Sensors
- Wiring
- Electrical connectors
- Control modules
Look for corrosion, moisture, or damaged wiring that could cause future electrical issues.
✔ Check the Fuel System
- Inspect the fuel tank for possible water contamination.
- Water in the fuel system can cause poor performance and engine damage.
