I have been saying this for years, that the formula that some Insurance Companies force on the shops has never worked. Same as labor rates. Not all labor is equal. Shop A may use state of the art equipment, have all manufacturer certifications, use manufacturer approved repair methods and materials, while Shop B next door may use a 30 year old MIG to plug weld quarters, and cave and pave dents with cheap filler against manufacturer recommendations. Should these shops share the same labor rate because they are in the same zip code? Absolutely not! Furthermore, this zip code average neglects to account for shops in the area under contract by insurance as a direct repair facility where the rate is a matter of contractual agreement, why should shops not under contract match it?

Rates should be dictated by quality, and by the ability of the shop to get the closest to factory repair possible. Additionally, the rates have been stagnant for years. A common average of $52-55 in most states has been standing since the early 2000’s, has not even adjusted for inflation. If it had the labor rate of $52 in 2002 would be $82.88 today in 2022. Nowhere are these changes reflected or even entertained by today’s adjusters. Thank you, EagleMMS for some of this great info! We all need to get on the same page about this!

We are pleased and proud to announce that the Rindge Police Department Life-Saving Award was presented to Detective Christopher Martin on Wednesday, January 15th, 2024, for heroic actions that resulted in the preservation of life. In addition to the Commendation, Detective Martin will be receiving a Life-Saving Medal, as pictured below, and a Life-Saving Service Pin to wear on his daily uniform.

Detective Martin's Commendation reads as follows:

On Saturday, December 21, 2024, Rindge Police Detective Christopher R. Martin, along with Officer Tessa M. Yoder, responded to a report of a single vehicle accident on US Route 119 near Meadow View Road. While enroute, they were updated that the driver may be impaired and had jumped into a nearby body of water. Upon their arrival, they determined that a Jeep Compass had traveled off the roadway and crashed into a tree, resulting in significant damage. They confirmed the driver was in the water and was struggling to stay afloat. A small group of passersby attempted to help from shore, but their efforts were ignored. By this time, the driver had been treading water for nearly 10 minutes.

The temperature was 15 degrees. With wind chill, the “real” air temperature was 5 degrees. Detective Martin recognized that the man was becoming increasingly distressed and likely hypothermic. As the man’s efforts to stay afloat were deteriorating, Detective Martin quickly shed his gear and jumped fully-clothed into the water, quickly realizing its depth was well over his own head. Despite the man’s attempts to resist Detective Martin’s assistance, he was able to bring the man to shore where he and Officer Yoder rendered aid until the arrival of EMS personnel. The man was ultimately transported by med-flight to a Trauma Center to be treated for serious injuries and severe hypothermia. The man survived and is expected to make a full recovery.

Where a failure to act or delayed action would likely have resulted in a tragic outcome, Detective Martin’s quick response, recognition of the severity of the situation and immediate and selfless actions resulted in saving a life. Detective Martin has displayed extreme professionalism and an innate value for human life.

Detective Martin is hereby commended for his actions and awarded with the Rindge Police Department Life Saving Medal.

Dated this 15th day of January, 2025

Rachel D. Malynowski
Chief of Police
