Lone Star Geyser 🌋 — one of Yellowstone’s coolest geysers that’s a little more off the beaten path. The geyser erupts roughly every 3 hours, shooting water up to 45 feet into the air, and the entire eruption sequence can last around 20 minutes. To see it, park at the Lone Star Geyser Trailhead just south of Old Faithful near Kepler Cascades, then hike about 4.8 miles round trip along the Firehole River. The trail is relatively flat and easy, but you’ll want to give yourself plenty of time to catch an eruption since the timing isn’t exact. Pro tip: check the eruption log near the geyser for recent eruption times and plan your hike around the next one. 🏔️

If you’re visiting Jackson Hole in the fall, you may hear an eerie, high-pitched call echoing across the valley. But what you hear isn’t the trapped souls of tourists who got stuck in the line to get into Yellowstone during the peak season.

It’s the sound of one of the West’s most iconic wildlife events: the elk rut, their annual breeding season, when bulls compete for the chance to mate with cows. It’s like reality TV, except it’s interesting.

In Jackson Hole, the rut typically begins in early September, peaks from mid-September through early October, and gradually tapers off as October progresses.

Where Can You See Elk During the Rut?

Jackson Hole is one of the best places in North America to observe elk in the fall. Popular viewing areas include:

- Grand Teton National Park
- The National Elk Refuge (particularly as migration begins later in the fall)
- Bridger-Teton National Forest
- Open meadows and sagebrush flats throughout the Jackson Hole valley
- TV shows like The Antlerette, The Great British Bugle— Off, and White Lotus (but just the season set on the Elk Refuge)
