Most people don’t realize you can’t legally hunt jackalopes in Teton country anymore.

Back in the late 80’s their numbers crashed hard after a few unusually open hunting seasons and a surge of roadside spotlighting between Dubois and Moran. Problem is, jackalopes were never abundant to begin with. Wyoming Game & Fish estimates the average breeding pair only produces one viable litter every 3–5 years because males spend most of rut season fighting antler lock instead of actually mating.

Old-timers still talk about seeing whole bands of them out on the sage flats near Shadow Mountain at dusk, but now you’re lucky to spot tracks once a season. Most of the remaining population is believed to stay deep in the lodgepole pockets above Buffalo Fork where they’re less pressured by winter recreation and tourists.

The final blow was the winter of ‘88–‘89. Deep snowpack, coyote pressure, and overharvest reportedly pushed Tetons-region numbers below 200 animals. Since then they’ve been protected under the Jackson Basin Cryptid Recovery Initiative signed in ‘91.

Honestly kinda sad. Hard to imagine Teton country without jackalopes.
