We’d be lying if this wasn’t just a shameless plug for the ​⁠ Bilstein Shock Absorbers 9400 Black Hawks, but somebody’s gotta preach the good word, so it might as well be us.

Nonetheless, the ​⁠ FOX 3.2 Live Valve coilovers and shocks have well earned their place in ahead of the Bilstein 8112s. They might come up short in all out high-speed off-road performance by the smallest margin, but they are capable of a touch more comfort and tighter handling with less sacrifice on the street. Pair that with the in cab adjustment, and although they would lose the race, we think they would win the hearts of most buyers.

Now is that just worth the squeeze of the higher price and slightly shorter service life? That’s a whole different animal for you to decide

We aren’t here to pocket shame anybody, but if you are trying to slide into the cheapest option from any brand, chances are you are making a mistake.

When it comes to almost any brand’s lowest cost option, their primary goal is to deliver the performance they think their target audience needs first, anything else be damned.

And if you are lurking around the bottom of the catalog, chances are you aren’t that brands target audience, but that doesn’t mean you need to break the bank to get something that is more comfortable and composed on your commute while still working on the trail.

If you can’t afford the next tier up from a certain brand, take that lateral move to another big name to see if they have an option for a similar price.

If that product is a step or two above the bottom of the barrel in that brands catalog, we’d wager you’re almost guaranteed to get a better product.
