Today…door panel. ⚔️
Side panels require proper light placement, body placement, and head placement. Perspective is EVERYTHING in PDR.
I like to break the door down into 3 major sections:
1️⃣ Upper Brace / Cavity
Almost every vehicle has this section. The size and access holes may vary, but having a solid 3-piece upper brace tool set is killer. Those tools aren’t just useful for upper braces either — they’re also money in drain ports, fenders, and quarter panels. The Xcalibur sets are awesome for this.
2️⃣ Middle Section
This is where things start getting crowded. You’ve usually got your first open section followed by intrusion beams, carrier plates, window regulators, tracks, foam inserts, sound deadening, wiring… modern doors are PACKED.
Before repair even begins:
✔️ Put your window guard in
✔️ Use a wedge or double air jack
✔️ Create space
✔️ Inspect ahead with your light
✔️ Scope/camera if available
If the dent is in that sweet spot under the upper brace? Awesome. Traditional door tool behind the belt molding and get to work.
But if not? Time to disassemble.
Trim removal, carrier plate removal, glass removal… because once you open the door up completely, now you can throw the WHOLE kitchen sink at it:
🔧 Whale tails
🔧 Brace tools
🔧 Rods
🔧 Specialty tools
3️⃣ Lower Section
If the dent is below the intrusion beam, I’m already setting expectations with the customer:
➡️ Interior trim is coming apart
➡️ Extensive damage or body line damage? Door is likely coming OFF the vehicle and onto a stand
Why?
Because perspective matters THAT much. Looking flat across the panel changes everything.
