FXR FRIDAY! A very special Born-Free edition of FXR Friday.
In 2019, legendary custom painter Bill Carter passed away, leaving behind much more than an incredible legacy—he left behind his beloved 1989 FXRP.
Due to final expenses, Bill’s wife Linda had no choice but to sell the bike. It was a decision that weighed heavily on her for the next six years. Bill had always said he’d never sell his FXR. It wasn’t just another motorcycle—it was his bike.
Painted by Bill himself in Candy Brandywine over black, with fabrication by Billy Westbrook, Painter Joe and Dale Pulde, this FXR carried decades of memories. It had crossed the country to Sturgis, covered countless California miles, and led hundreds of SFV Club rides. Linda often says she earned plenty of gray hairs riding passenger behind “Wild Bill.”
The day she signed over the title, I promised Linda that if the opportunity ever came, I’d bring Billy’s FXR back home.
That day finally came in December 2025 when Don Heckman called and simply said, “I’m ready to let Billy’s bike go.”
In January, my son Logan and I made the trip to Chatsworth. I was honestly nervous lifting the cover, afraid the bike I’d remembered was gone forever. Instead, there it was—untouched, exactly as Bill had left it. Don had cared for it all these years, even adding a beautiful hand-painted tribute to the rear fender. After a handshake, a hug, and a 120-mile ride home, we planned one final surprise.
Linda had no idea Billy’s FXR was waiting for her.
Some promises are worth keeping.
Enjoy the surprise.
