Our hearts are deeply saddened by this news. Thoughts and prayers are with the families of both the teacher and the student.
An Iowa teacher and her 10-year-old student died during a fifth grade field trip at Lake Macbride State Park after an incident near the Coralville Reservoir spillway.
Hannah Jorgensen, 24, was recovered from the water and pronounced dead at the scene Tuesday. Authorities searched through the night before recovering Ahmed Osman, 10, from the reservoir Wednesday afternoon.
The Iowa City Community School District said the deaths occurred during a School of the Wild trip and called the loss devastating for the entire Borlaug Elementary community. More than a dozen agencies assisted in the search and recovery operation, and the incident remains under investigation.
